To all whom'it may concern:

Be it known that I, TOWNSEND BURNET a citizen of the United States, residing at Edgewater Park, in the county of Burlington and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoes, of which'the following is a specification. I

.My invention consists of an improved shoe and is particularly useful as a golf or other sport shoe. I

One object of my invention is to provide a shoe of the above mentioned type which can be easily and quickly put on or removed and which can be worn over an. ordinary street shoe.

Another object is to so construct my improved shoe that it will be light in weight and comfortable to wear.

A further object is to provide a shoe of the above described type which will be firmly ment of the foot.

A still furtherobject .is to make my imroved shoe of simple construction and so that it can be manufactured at a small cost.

These objects, and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is .a perspective view showing my invention attached to an ordinary street shoe.

Fig. 2 is a top plan view of my improved shoe.

Fig. 3 is a fragmentary section on a slightly enlarged scale taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.

Fig. 4 is a view of similar nature to Fig. 3 showing a modification of my invention.

Referring to the drawings, 1 is a sole portion which can-be made of any suitable sheet material such as leather, fiber, or metal. A hood 2 is secured to the forward end of the sole 1 and is designed to receive the tip 3 of the shoe 4, such as illustrated in Fig. 1.

Two straps 5 and 6 are secured to the sole 1 by rivets 7 or other suitable means, and these two straps cross each other at 8 and are secured by a rivet 9. The crossing of the straps 5 and 6 takes place at such position to the rear of the sole 1 that the cross ing will be located under the shoe 4 directly in front of the heel 10. The free ends of provided with a buckle 14 and its held to but will permit free move- 18 will form a cushion so as back of the foot so as to relieve direct presthe straps 5 and 6 aredesigned to embrace the back of the shoe 4, the heel 10 serving as a limiting guide to permit the straps to extend upwardly at an incline as clearly shown inFig. 1.

The strap 5 has a buckle 11 secured thereto in which the end 12 of the strap 6 engages, so that various degrees of tension can be placed: upon the adjusting them by'means of the buckle 11.

A third strap 13 encircles the upper portion of the foot and thereby provides a girdle. The strap 13 has one of its ends other end is designed to engage the buckle 14 so that ;he girdle can be securely bound around the oot.

A cushion slide 15 is secured to the girdle 13, and this slide consists of a folded strip 16 of soft material such for example as soft leather. The strip 16 is folded in such manner that an upper loop 17 is provided which extends above and within the girdle 13. Another loop 18 is formed by the folding of the strip 16 and depends from the girdle 13 as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3.

The free ends 19 and 20are secured to the'girdle 13 as clearly shown in Fig. 3, so that the upper loop 17 and the lower loop to engage the sure against the tendon which extends upwardly from the heel of a persons foot.

The loop 18 forms a guideway through which the strap 6 is free to slide, thus the girdle 13 assists in holding the straps 5 and 6 in the inclined position shown in Fig. 1, and the foot is free to move without afiecting the position of the sole 1 upon the bottom of the shoe 4. c

I preferably provide the bottom of the sole 1 with cleats 21, and a clip 22 such for ex ample as described in my application for United States patent Serial No. 165,07 6 filed April 28, 1917, the cleats 1 serving as a ground-engaging means to prevent slipping while the clip 22 serves'as a means for preventing lateral movement between the shoe 4 and the sole 1.

In the form of my invention shown in Fig. 4, I have illustrated all the elements of Fig. 3, and in addition I have provided an auxiliary cushion 23 on the loop 18, said cushion 23 being designed to engage the back of the shoe 4. the like and can be cemented or otherwise suitably secured to the inner'surface f sa depending loop 18.

The upwardly extending loop 17 prevents the upper edge of the strap or girdle 13 from cutting into the back of the foot and thereby provides an extremely comfortable securing means which is'capable of assisting the pullof the straps 5 and 6 without inconveniencing the wearer.

.By the arrangement'of the straps as above described, tension is placed on the sole l in such manner that the tip 8 will be securely .held within the hood 2 and the sole 1 will be firmly held against the sole of the shoe 4E, thusmy invention is of extremely practical use.

While I have described my invention as taking a particular form, it will be understood that the various parts of my invention may be changed without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction set forth, butconsider that I am at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come within the scope of the appended claims.

3. A shoe of the character described, comprising a sole, a hood on the front end of said sole, straps secured to said sole, a girdle arranged to pass around the ankle, and

a folded strip secured. to said girdle, said folded strip secured to said girdle, said'strip having a loop projecting abovethe girdle and providing a cushion, said strip also having a loop projecting below the girdle, said latter loop forming a guideway and support for said first straps, and an auxiliary cushion secured to said str p, substantially as described.
