T0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES STARR, of the city, county, andState of New York, have invented a new and useful'Improvement in Tools for Embossing, Lettering, and Gilding or otherwise Performing what is Technically Termed Finishing Books After Binding; and I dohereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1, is a perspective view. Fig. 2, is a transverse section` of the tools mounted: on the roller; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the same. F ig. 4, is a transverse section of the outside case detached.

It consists in theemployment `of a looseihollow cylinder or cylinders fitted upon a solid cylinder or` roller and having spaces. out through to admit of loose tools being se- "ciired to the solid or foundation cylinder or roller; the edge of the space in the outside cylinder forming the frame margin or outline of the panel or ornament and the inside being iilled with ornaments of any design suitable to thetasteof the designer or binder.

To enable others" skilled inthe art, to make and use my invention I will proceed to den scribe fully its constructionand operation.

A represents the foundation roller or cylinder which is of metal providedwith a hole @,which fits to ashaftor aXle. Bis a case or hollow cylinder which fits to the outside of the cylinder` B, this case or. cylinder being of the requiredfdiameter of the embossing lettering or gilding tool. An opening b, b, of any suitable form is cut through the case B, the edges ormargin being of any suitable form; in "the drawing it is represented as the frame or border of a panel for the back of a book.` `The space within the openings is illedor partly lled with small tools (c) `(c) (c) which are secured as is also the case by glue or other adhesive materia-l to the face of the roller A, each tool having the same form asthoughit were part of the case or cylinder B, and if it is of the same thickness as the case or cylinder; it is better however to glue a piece of paper (d) to the surface of the roller and glue the small tools c, c, o, to it as they will hold more securely; `in the latter case the tools must be as much thinner than the case as the thickness ofthe paper. The tool when b thus prepared isiised in the same manner as a solid cylindrical tool either in my improved machine for backing and back-finishing or in any other way that may be convenient. Any number of short cases or cylinders B may be employed upon one foundation roller A, and letters, figuresor any suitable device represented by or secured within spaces cut in each.

The principal advantage of this improveglued immediately to the roller A, `must be v ment in the manner of forming the tools consists in t-he great number of devices which may be formed by a small number of tools.

I do not claim forming various devices by gliiing or securing loose or detached too-ls to a surface as'that is common. But
