UNITED bTATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADOLPHUS S. GOODItIOI-I, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN J. MOORE, OF SAME PLACE.
COMBINED RULER AND CALENDAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 365,916, dated July 5, 1887.
Application filed March 23, 1887. Serial No. 232,060. (No model.)
of New York city, New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined Ruler and Calendar, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a calendar" baseplate, made of wood or other approved material, in suitable length, breadth, and thick- IO mess to serve for a ruler, and having a channel-way along one side, in which the calendar, printed on a strip of cardboard or equivalent material, is inserted and retained for use, and is removable for renewal when its period has passed, all as hereinafter fully described, ref erence being made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figurelis a plan view of the side of the de vice, showing the calendar. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the other side, and Fig. 3 is an end view.
I take a long narrow and thin strip or bar, a, of wood, rubber, or other approved matcrial suitable for a ruler, and make a'chanchannel-way, as shown, said strip being of such breadth and thickness as will bind it in the groove with sufficient friction to hold it securely during the period of its use, but will 55 allow it to be drawn out freely when its period has expired and another is to be substituted. For large and distinctly-visible figures of the calendar I prefer to use the whole length for an annual calendar; but in a bar of sixteen 0 inches, or thereabout, a biannual calendar of sufficient elearucss may be employed. I intend to print both sides of the strips consecutively, so that one renewal may be had by reversing the strip. Afterward a new strip 4 5 printed for the succeeding periods is to be substituted. The names of the months may be printed on the card strips along with the numbers of the days in the common way; but as the names do not require to be changed I pre fer to print them on one of the margins of the bar, as represented in Fig. 1, in order to utilize all the space of the card strip for larger and more conspicuous numbers. They may be burned in or impressed with dies, so as not to be rubbed or worn off by the ab asion to which the surface is exposed. The card strips are not exposed to wear, by reason of the channel being considerably deeper than the thickness of the card. I make a bevel-edge, f, on the back and mark a scale of measure thereon, as 6) is usual in rulers of common form, and thus provide a combined tool or instrument comprising a calendar, ruler, and measure, in which the ruler serves for one of the elements of the 'calendar-viz., the base-plate-andl said baseplate ofthe calendar constitutes the ruler, all in one-device, affording greater convenience than two separate devices, and avoiding the duplication of parts .necessary when made separately.
I am aware that a calendar has been fastened on the surface of a thin plate, and I am also aware that a ruler has been made with a chain ber having a sliding cover to contain pencils, and make no claim for such devices.
hat I claim, and desire to secure by Let-- tersPatent, is-
l. The improved calendar consisting of the channeled and grooved base plate or bar and the card-board calendarstrip, said strip being 8c inserted in the channeled groove below the surface of the bar, substantially as described.
2. The improved calendar consisting of the channeled and grooved base plate or bar, having the names of the months along one of the margins of the channels, and the card-board calendar-strip having the numbers of the days of the months correspondingly printed on it, substantially as described.
