SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 521,287, dated June 12, 1894.

Be it known that I, HOWARD S. INGERsOLL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, andy State of New York, have invented a new and useful Hand Stamping Device, ofl which the following is a specification.

My invention relates mainly to rubber or flexible stamps and type, and the object of my invention is to, first, provide a stamp that can b e readily taken from its base and another substituted; second, type uniform in height and alignment, that can be-readily set up and changed, and that are readily interchangeable with stamps, or what is called permanent matter on the same base, and, third, a base or holder adapted to receive and hold these stamps and type. A I attain these objects in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which-` Figure l is a top view of stamp holdercontaining both permanent matter and changeable dates and type; Fig. 2 a cross section of same on :c x; Fig. 3 a View illustrating method of application to die plate of self inking stamp. Fig. 4 showsone Way of combining the two colors of rubber. Fig. 5 shows a type or stamp with a single tongue.

In the following description I shall call a permanent inscription, like the word Paid in Fig. 1 a permanent stamp although it may be taken from the base and another substituted, While the independent characters I Will designate as type although they may be dates, pictures, chess, checkers or other interchangeable characters.

I mold and vulcanize or otherwise form the permanent stamp as well as the type with a series of tongues and grooves c-c upon the back, or in case of a very small type or narroW line stamp a single tongue or groove' as shown in Fig. 2, c, c. The base B, is formed on its face with a series of tongues and grooves corresponding to those on the back of the stamps and letters, which fit snugly into the same as shown in Fig. 2. For self inking stamps and all those having a metal die plate I form a thin facing which I attach to the die plate as shown in Fig. S-B, the

'rubber than the face, and those of the holder or base rigid, except when used With self inking or other stamps having metal die plates, When I prefer to make the base B, and tongues b. b. These type and printing forms or stamps are so made that the tongues lit snugly into the corresponding grooves in the holder or base, so that each holder itself, even in an isolated position When pressed into place, Without quads, spaces or locking up of any kind, and each may be shifted or taken out and another ksubstituted Without disturbing the others.

This invention is a great advantage in or- .dinary hand stamps that are to be attached or cemented to the base, especially if long' and narrow, or Where they are to be placed upon the periphery of a Wheel, as the groove or grooves keep them in perfect line, and cement if used, takes a better hold.

For letter press Work I prefer to use celluloid for the type. A grooved plate is used in lieu of the chase on the press, which need not be removed in making changes. For printing restaurant and 'other tickets, Where large type or logotypes are used and frequent changes are required, this ,system is of great advantage, as Well as for many other purposes which are suggested by its extreme simplicity and facility with which different sizes of characters may be` arranged in the same liney or column Without the trouble of justication. Display Words and sentences may be soinade that the serrations upon the back Will'run at an angle to its reading line so that When placed upon the holder with other matter they will read up or down at an angle with the balance of the inscription.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 5 The combination of an elastic printing type with a supporting bed or holder, each being provided with projecting ribs, by means of which the two may be locked and interlocked indefinitely by simply pressing them together and pulling them apart, substantially as set :o forth.
