IMPROVEMENT IN HARVESTER-PITMEN.

'ro ALL WHoM 1T MAY coNcERN:
Be it known that we, Grotten B. GARLINGHOUSE and Crans B. Gannmcnonsa of North Madison, in the V county of Jeierson, and State of Indiana, have invented a new and'useful Improvement in Harvesters; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe samereference being had to the accompanying drawings, in Whichf'- Figure 1 shows a planvicw of our invention. Figure 2 a section (enlargedjon line :u x. Figure 3`the several parts of the same.
Our` invention consists in an improvement in the construction and arrangement of the pitman-connection of a grain or grass-harvester.
The end of the pitman A, where it connects with the heel of the cutter-'bar B, is turned at` right angles, or a piece may be inserted in the end, projecting at right angles from it. Thisend is of a conical or conoidal form, and enters .into a corresponding hole on thc/,side of the heel of the cutter-bar. On the opposite side of the heel of the cutter-bar, and in the -same axial line, is another conical or conoidal hole, similar to the first, which receives the conical end of the clamp D. On the front side .of the pitman, and in the same axial line as the conical projection, is a conical hole, for receiving the end ofthe set-screw C. This clamp, in connection with the set-screw C', contines the end of the pitman-rod securely to the heel of the cutter, and is secured in position bythe binding nut S,lon the outside of the clamp. The clamp D, with Vits conical end bearing against and in the conical hole in the cutter-bar, and the end of theset-screw resting and bearing against the pitman, which'in turn reste in the cutter-bar, gives the greatest freedom in turning on the centre, and at the same time permits the least possibleV play of the parts in the line ot' motion, and is very easily adjusted to take up any slack caused by friction and vconsequent wear of any of the parts in the operation of the machine, by simply tightening the set-screw C and its binding-nut S. The function andoperation ofthe clamp will be the same whether it is arranged sothat the end of the set-screw C bears againstftlre. pitman or against .the`heel of the cutter-bar;
In order that the cutter-bar maymove truly, and not be raised from its proper place in operating the machine on uneven ground, we place upon the finger-bar, near the inner endof the cutter-bar, a holding-plate, F, and secure it firmly by screws. .This plate projects over the 'upper surface ofthe cutter-bar, and forms a guide, to receive which a groove is cut upon the side of4 the heel. By this device the heel of the cutter-bar is effectually retained in its proper plane of movement, and by means simpler thanthose hitherto in use.
The pin H is inserted through a horizontal hole in the innery end ofthe guide-plate, and projects behind the heel of the cutterbar, to prevent its accidental withdrawal, when the cutting-apparatus is folded. for transpor: tation. The pin H is retained in positionby the spring L, which bears against'its head. v
Having described 4our invention, what we claim as new, anddcsire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statcs,'is i u Y i In-the pitman connection with the cutter of a harvestingmachine, 'the single conical orconcidaipivot or point on the ptman, entering into acorresponding hole in one side of the knife-heel, in combination with the clamp, or its equivalent, arranged to work on the oppositesde of the heel, on a centre coincident with the'point of thc pitman, for the purpose oi' aiording free movement in turning on the centres, and to take up the slack caused by wear in vworking the machine. A
In combination with` the pitman and cutterbar of a harvesting-machine, the separate detachable holdingdevice or clamp D, constructed as describedyfolr the purpose of keeping the'pitman in proper position with the knife-heel, and to be easily'removed. l v l GEORGE B. GARLINGHOUSE,
cYRUs B. eAnLINGHoUsE. Witnesses:
