T0 ALL WHOM IT MAY GONCERN.:
Beit known that I, JAMES T. HARRIS, of Swampscott, in the county of Essex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and improved Leather-Roller; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will-enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, `forming part of this specieation, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical cross-section of `a leather-roller, illustrating my improvement.l
Figure 2 is a top view of the same, theroller's being detached.
Figure'B is a detail cross-section of a modified form oi' my improved attachment.
Similar letters ofreference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its objectto furnish an improved attachment for rollers for rolling leather, so as to make the'maohine more convenient in` use, and to do away with the annoyance now so frequently experienced from the wet leather adhering to the rollcrf and it 'consists in the guard or gun-rds, in combinntion'wth the rollers, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the frame of the machine, t'o which the rollers B and C are pivoted, the journals ofthe lowcr roller, C, working in slots in the frame A, and being raised, to press the leather with the desired force, by means of a fcot-lever, in the ordinary manner.
I) is n guard, the ends of which are attached to the frame A, and which is made of such a form as to cover thelower part of-that side of theroller B at which the leather passes in between the rollers, its lower edge not extending flown so far4 as to `interfere-Lwith the said rollers acting properly upon the leather.
E is a guard attached or pivoted to the frame A, so as to cover the upper part ofthe rear side of the' lower roller C. VThe guard Eis made dat, s o as tol extend back, andr serve as a leverto loosen the leather from the roller, should it adhere telit. The guarded) and E are so formed that there may be a. slot or opening between them, through which'the leather passes, es shown in figs. 1 and 3. i
If desired, the guardsl) andE may be made in onepiece, or may be rigidly attached to each, as shownin g.,3; but prefer to makertheln separate, n sirst described, so that they may operate or be used independ- -ently'of each other. vBy thisconstruction, as the hand oi the operator moves forward with the leather, it will strike against the guards, which are stationary, and be stopped, instead of striking against the revolvingroller, and being drawn in between the rollers, and being injured or crushed, and at the same time, should the wet leather adhere to the rollers, by moving the said guard or guards upon their pivoting points, it may be easily detached. v
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent`` The guards D and E, either or hoth,'and whether made separate or in one piece, in combination with the rollers of a. leather-rolling machine, substantially as hcrcinlshown and described, and for the purposes setforth.
The above specification of my invention signed by me, this 16th day of March, 1868.
JAMES T. HAnRls.
