ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES- Patented May 23, 1905.
PATENT OFFICE.
NINE ONE-HUNDREDTHS TO HERMAN MOSCOVITGH, OF PATERSON,
NEW JERSEY.
LlFE-PRESERVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 796,682, dated May 23, 1905.
Application filed November 28,1904. $erial No. 234.442.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIGMUND FRIEDMAN,-a
I citizen of the United States. residing in Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Life-Preservers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of' the invention, such as will enable others skilled inlthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to theaccompanyingdrawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a partof thisspecification.
This invention relates to life-preservers of the life-belt class; and it has for its object to provide a relatively inexpensive and reliable life-belt comprising two partsnamely the belt proper and an inflatable tube-so attached together that they can either be worn assembled under the clothing, hidden, or the belt.
' with a buckle b, pivoted on a plate 0, which is directly attached to the end of the belt. The other end of the belt is pierced in the usual manner with holes (Z, so as to cooperate with the tongue 6 in order to secure the belt in place.
f is an inflatable tube carried by the belt and for this purpose having a series of loops g surrounding and attached to it. The belt proper and tube may be separated by drawing the belt out of the loops.
The tube f comprises an outer casing h, preferably of silk or some other suitable fabric, and an inside rubber tube proper, i. The casing prevents overinflation of the tube proper, i, and the ends of the casing may be secured together by hooks and eyes 7'.
k is a tubular valve-casing fixed in a rectangular mounting piece Z, having lips m,
- which receive the upper and lower edges n of the plate 0, whereby it may be slipped onto or ofl the latter. To this end the portion of the plate 0 which receives the mounting Z is bent slightly outwardly, as at 0 in Fig. 4.
In the casing 7r; is arranged a turn-valve 12, having a duct (1 therethrough which when turned will aflord communication between ports 0 and s in the casing k. Onto nipples t at the ports a and 8 may he slipped flexible tubes an, the former communicating with the inflatable tube proper and the latter having a mouthpiece w, whereby the wearer can blo air into the tube 2'. 1
. y is a check-valve, like that on ordinary bicycle-tires, whereby the tube a may be connected with a pump, and thus inflated by me chanical means.
.Having thus fully described my invention what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. The combination of a belt, an inflatable tube detachably secured to said belt, a casing for the tube, a securing means for the belt, and a Valve structure for the tube attached thereto and detachably secured to the belt, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a belt, an inflatable tube detachably secured to said belt, a securing means for the belt comprising a plate, a valve and valve-casing for the tube, and another plate carrying said valve-casing and detachably mounted on said first-named plate.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of November, 1904.
SIGMUND FRIEDMAN.
