AMUSEMENT DEVICE APPLIOATIONTILED SEPT. 22.1904.
INVENTOR @Jivn em flag/Z49 By ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES Patented May 23, 1905.
PATENT OFFICE.
AMUSEMENT DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 790,613, dated May 23, 1905.
Application filed September 22,1904. $erial No. 225,440.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES O. BOYLE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a new and Improved Amusement Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in amusement devices in the form of slid'eways designed not only to afford pleasure to children but serving as a means for healthful ex ercise, the object being to provide a device of this character that will be simple in con-. struction and inexpensive, that may be used indoors or in the open air, and that may be conveniently folded for transportation or When not in use.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters'of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an amusement device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 3 is a section on the line w m of Fig. 1. Fig. 4: is
a section-on the line y y of Fig 2, and Fig. 5 shows the head-prop employed.
The amusement device or slideway com prises an inclined portion, (here shown as consisting of two sections 1 and 2, the bottom of the section 1 beingformed in a compound curve, while the section 2 is longitudinally concaved.) As here shown, the sections are secured together by hinges 3, the pintles of which may be removed when it is desired to pack the sections for storage or transportation. On these curved sections are side boards 4, which, as indicated in Fig. 4, are provided with channels in their inner sides to receive the edges of the bottom boards of the sections.
Removably connected to the end of the section 2 is an extension member 5 and removably connected to this extension member 5 is another extension member, 6, these members being provided with'side boards 7, which.
need not be so high as the side boards 4:.
The flat surfaces of the several sections and members have a covering 8 of any suitable smooth materialsuch, for instance, as wood veneering, oil-cloth, or the likeso as to reduce friction to a minimum.
The upper end of the section 1 is supported by a head-prop 9, the side members of which are divergent, so as to secure stability, and to these side members steps 10 are attached, so that children may readily ascend to the starting-point of the slideway. As indicated, the side members of the head-prop are bifurcated at the upper end to provide recesses to receive the ends of a rod 11, attached to the under side of the section 1 by means of clips 12. A prop consisting of connected legs 13 is also arranged near the junction of the sections 1 and '2. These legs are also bifurcated to receive pins on the upper end of the section 2.
Whenthe device is set up, it may be thoroughly braced by means of a cord 14, attached to a cross-bar 15, connecting the legs 13, and to a cross-bar 16, attached to the under side of the section 2, and a stay-cord 17 also connects the cross-bar 15 with one of the steps 10. The bottom board of the extension member 5 abuts against the end of the bottom board of the section 2 when slid into the channel formed in the side boards of said section, and the parts are held together by means of straps 18, secured to the under side of the member 5 and engaging with buttons 19 on the under side of the section 2. The extension members 5 and 6 are detachably secured together by strips 20.
It will be seen that an amusement device embodying my invention may be readily moved from place to place and when not in use may be readily folded together and packed away.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. An amusement device comprising a slideway formed on a downwardly-inclined compound curve, and a hinged extension thereof concaved longitudinally.
2. Au amusement device comprising a slide- Way constructed of downwardly inclined hinged sections formed on a compound curve,
side members and steps connecting the same together, a slideway detachably connected at its upper end to the upper ends of said side members, and embodying downwardly-inclined hinged sections formed on a compound curve, extensible members detachably connected to the lower end of the slideway, and also detachably connected together, a lower prop, flexible means connecting the latter with the head-prop, and similar means connecting said lower prop with the lower part of the slideway.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES C. BOYLE. Witnesses:
