JAMES M. MAROUKIS, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
WATER SPORT DEVICE.
Application filed March 4,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jaarns M. Mnnomrrs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Yfater Sport Devices, of which the following is a specification.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a device for use in connection with aquatic sports and games, of a buoyant character, and which in its general configuration simulates the body of an amphibious bird, animal or creature, and is adapted to be employed by a bather or swimmer and used for sustaining or assisting to sustain the person at the surface of the water.
In the accompanying drawing Figure l is a perspective view of the vice indicating the use of the same.
Figure 2 is a cross sectional view therethrough on an enlarged scale.
As illustrated, the device comprises a buoyant body 1, which preferably simulates an amphibious bird, animal or creature, and in the drawing the body is shown as illustrating a duck. The object in providing a body of such character and configuration is not only to make it ornamental and attractive, but the shape is suchthat it will the more readily cleave or cut through the water when the device is propelled.
Preferably this body comprises a casing 2 which may be of canvas or other waterproof material, the exterior surface thereof being appropriately decorated or figured to simulate the creature which the body is intended to represent. The casing 2 is filled with ma terial 3, such as cork or other buoyant substance. The body 1 is provided at a point between its ends with an opening which passes vertically therethrough, and is of sufficient size to receive the body of the user when the device is applied, as shown in Figure 1 of the drawing.
Crossed straps 5, preferably of elastic m terial, are attached at their ends to the lower side of the body 1, and extend transversely across the lower end of the opening l. The said straps are adapted to pass between the legs and lie in the crotch of the user when applied. These straps 5 serve as Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J 10, 1922 1920. Serial No. 363,333.
a seat or support for the person, and also act to retain the device upon the same.
Other straps of a sectional character are attached to the top side of the body 1 on opposite sides of the opening l and may be secured over the shoulders of the user, whereby the device is more positively held in position, or the front members thereof may be used as reins to direct or guide the device through the water. A ring 7, secured to the tail of the figure, permits a holding cord to be secured thereto and may also be employed in connecting a series of devices together.
The device constitutes an attractive supporting vehicle for bathers, which may be employed in a variety of ways and for various water sports as will be obvious.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the constructlon, operation and many advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion and minor details of construction, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A device of the character set forth, comprising a buoyant body simulating an amphibious creature and having an upwardly disposed advance end providing a head, said body being provided at a point between its ends with an opening adapted to receive the body of a user.
2. A device of the character set forth, comprising an elongated tapered buoyant body simulating an amphibious creature and provided at a point between its ends with an opening and supporting means of less width than the opening extending across said opening at the underside of the body.
In testimony whereof, I alli my in the presence of two witnesses.
J AMES M. MAROUKIS.
