' A. 'E. MURPHY AQUATIC DOLL Filed Aug. 17, 1922 atl'or no.1 5.
Patented Oct. 20, 1925.
UNITED STATES ALBERT E. MURPHY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
, 1 AQUATIC DOLL.
Application filed August 17, 1922.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALnnn'r E. MURPHY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have'invented new and useful ln'iprovoments in Aquatic Dolls, oi which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to dolls and more particularly those of the aquatic variety, the invention having for its principal objcct the provision of a doll which will float in upright position when placed in the water and which will afford much amusement to children while bathing.
A further object of the invention is to pro vide an inflatable doll of the above mentioned character which may be deflated and packed in a small space for shipment or storage.
The invention also has for an object to "furnish a doll of the kind stated whi h will be strong and durable and which may be cheaply manufactured.
lVith the above and other objects in view as will become more apparent. as the description proceeds, the invention comprises a novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, and in order that the same may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.
In the drawing,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a doll embodying my invention, and
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof".
Referring specifically to the drawing wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout, numeral 5 denotes a bathing suit of rubberized cloth within which is located a toy balloon 6, the same being inserted through a hole 5 in back of the bathing suit 5, in a deflated condition after which itmay be inflated by means of the usual nipple ("3 which is positioned in registry with the hole 5 oi the suit. The arms 7 of the doll are made of: wood or other buoyant material and are insertible through the sleeves '7" from the inside and their inner ends are provided with lateral enlargements 7 whereby the outward pas A sage thereof will be limited, the stitching of the sleeve 7 to the suit 5 serving as a reinforcement of the sleeve hole and preventing stretching thereof to permit the outward passage of the enlarged end ot the arms.
Serial no. 582,455.
It will be understood that the arms may be placed in position bciore the ballon 6 is inflated or prior to placing the same in the suit 5; and that inflation thereof will prevent backing of the arms through the sleeve. The head 8 is made of wort. balsa or some other very light material and the neck tapers outwardly at its base to comform to the rotund configuration of the doll, this outwardly tapered portion extending beneath and beingsewed to the elastic neck band 8" of relatively heavy rubber sheeting so that when the balloon is inflated it will be. pressed upwardly against the neck band 8 and firmly held in place.
The legs 9 of wood orother suitable material are provided with enlargedlmobs 9 on their upper ends and are insertible from the inside through leg holes in the su t 5 which latter are surrounded by reinforcing fabric portions 9 ai-isimulating the legs of the suit, the bottom edges oiiwhich are ornamentally fringed as shown in the drawing. These reinforcing: portions or suit legs 9 serve to prevent the enlarged knobs 9 from being forced through. the leg openings in the suit upon inflation of: the balloon 6. vllach leg 9 has a lead bar 10 therein to cause the doll to maintain a vertical and partially submerged position in the water.
From the foregoing description read in connection with the accompanying drawing. the novel features of my doll will be readily understood.
The lead bars 10 in the legs will be of sutficient weight to submerge the lower body of the doll and will maintain the same in a vertical position when in the water. The head and arms being of light buoyant material will not counteract the eltect of the weighted legs. .The opening 5 shown may be a slit if desired so that the nipple 6 will be concealed from view when the balloon is inflated.
While I have described and illustrated the preferred embodiment ot my invention. it will be understood that I do not propose to limit myself to the specific details set forth. since various changes and modifications will immediately suggest themselves t those skilled in the art within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim:
1. A doll comprising a fabric body portime having openings therein, limbs of relatively stiff material carried by said body portion and extending from certain of said openings, enlargements formed at the inner ends of said limbs and extending beyond the edges of their respective openings, and an inflatable sack insertible into said fabric body portion through another of said open ings for expanding and filling said body portion, and pressing said enlargements a ainst the sides of said openings for maintaining said limbs in place. 7
2. ii doll comprising a fabric body portion having openings therein, limbs of relatively stitt' material carried by said body portion and extending outwardly from certain of said openings in which they are freely positioned, enlargements formed at the inner ends of said limbs and extending laterally beyond the edges of their respective openings whereby to limit outward movement or said limbs, means insertible through another of said openings for filling said body portion and maintaining the shapethereof, and said above mentioned means also engaging and pressing said limb enlargements against the sides o'f said openings for maintaining said limbs in place.
3. A. doll comprising a tabric body portion having openings therein, limbs ot relatively stifi' material carried by said body portion and extending outwardly from cers tain of said openings in which they are freely positioned, enlargements formed at the inner ends of said limbs and extending laterally beyond the edges of their respective openings whereby to limit outward movement of said limbs, buoyant means insertible through another of said openings for filling said body portion andmaintaining the shape thereof, said above mentioned means alsoengaging and pressing said limb enlargen'ients against the sides of said open ings for maintaining said limbs in place, and weights carried by the outwardly extending portions of certain 0t said limbs for maintaining the body portion of the doll in an upright position especially when floating in water, said weights also constituting a means secondary to said body portion filling means for maintainin the enlarged inner ends of their limbs in intimate con tact with the part of the fabric body portion adjacent the limb openings.
st. An aquatic doll comprising a substantially hollow body portion having leg openings therein and a relatively enlarged opening for the reception of a buoyant member, weighted legs insertible through said enlarged opening and positioned in said leg openings, said legs having enlargements at their upper ends, the dimensions of which are greater than the dimensions oi said leg openings whereby when said doll is afloat the said enlarged portions will engage the inner walls of said openings.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature.
