P. G. DOKKENWADEL.
A BOWLING ALLEY.
Patented July 7, 1896.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRIEDRICH G. DOKKENWADEL, OF COSHOCTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO MAX PIERON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BOWLING-ALLEY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 563,362, dated July 7, 1896.
Application filed March 18, 1896. Serial No. 583,694. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH G. DOKKEN- WADEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Coshocton, in the county of Ooshocton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bowling-Alleys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in bowling-alleys, and one object of my invention is the provision of a bowling-alley which will be easily constructed and which will deaden the sound and thus produce abowlingalley which will be comparatively noiseless.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a bowling-alley constructed of sections, said sections having a novel and peculiar end connection insuring a close joint between their ends to provide a perfectly smooth surface for the cloth or like material.
Another object of my invention is the'provision of a bowling-alley which will be very light in weight, enabling it to be easily transported from place to place and put together, and which will be of simple, durable, and inexpensive construction.
To attain the desired object, the invention consists of a bowling-alley embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts substantially as disclosed herein.
Figure 1 represents a perspective View of the complete alley. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal sectional View, and Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of one end of a section to more clearly show the peculiar construction of the ends to form the close joint between the sections.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates the surface or covering, which may be of any material, but preferably some soft yielding substance like billiard-cloth, rubber, linoleum, or the like, and D designates the sections forming the alley. These sections consist each of an upper and lower flat plate or strip 0, to which are secured the side strips D, which are formed at their abutting ends with notches or recesses E, which when the sections are joined together form a close connection F, and between said ends is placed the cross-piece G, which with the notches of the side pieces forms what may be termed an interlocking connection, and this is one of the vital features of my invention, as it enables the alley to be quickly set up or built, makes a perfect joint, and permits the same to be readily detached and allows the alley to be easily transported. From this construction it will be observed that the said end and side strips make the sections hollow, and each section is preferably divided into two compartments by means of the cross-piece H, the main purpose of which is to form a brace or stay for each section in order that they may stand an immense amount of strain or weight without danger of collapsing, and in the hollow compartment of each section I place some loose material J, such, for instance, as excelsior or the like, which will not add much weight to the sections, but will form a perfect deadening material, thus rendering the alley free from noise, which is a feature of paramount importance.
I claim- A bowling-alley composed of a series of sections each consisting of the upper and lower strips, the side strips to which the upper and lower strips are secured, said side strips hav-.
ing their abutting ends angle-notched to form an interlocking connection, the end crosspieces, the intermediate cross-pieces dividing each section into compartments and a sounddeadening material in the compartments.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRIEDRICH G. DOKKENWADEL. Witnesses:
T. O. Rocnn, L. D. SCHOTT.
