PATENT. OFFICE.
SHADE-SUPPORT FOR LAMP-BURNERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 790,345, dated May 23, 1905.
Application filed July 26, 1904. Serial No. 218,221.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, FRANK N. CooLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shade-Supports for Lamp-Burners; and-I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as willenable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. V v
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in shade-supports for gas and other burners; and the object of the invention is to produce a device of this character by which I dispense with set-screws commonly employed for fastening the globe to the holder, and in the provision of a support embodying various details of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which'- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved shade-holder illustrated as applied to a gasburner. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the holder. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail perspective View of the base or support for the wires forming a part of the holder, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view through the base of the holder which fits upon the burner.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a gasburner of the usual construction having a shoulder A about the vertical jet-supporting shell, and B designates a flanged disk centrally apertured and adapted to rest upon said shoulder and forming the base of the globesupporting device. Said disk is provided with flange B,-and said flange is provided with recesses or'cut-away portions o, arranged at intervals and adapted to receive each the shank portion of a wire D. In the drawings I have illustrated three arms or wires forming the support for a globe, although I do not limit myself to any particular number, as four could be employed equally as well. The inner end of each arm or wire D is bent on the arc of a circle and is adapted to be held by the overhanging ends of said flange-sections, which flanges are clenched down securely about the inner end of each wire or arm, thereby securely holding the same to the disk which forms the base of the shadesupporting device. When. the end of each wire is thus secured to the disk by the flanges thereof, the shank portion of the Wire extends through the space, as illustrated, and is bent, preferably, to form a coil D, and the extreme outer end of each wire or arm is bent to-form a hook E, adapted to clamp the flange about the lower portion of the shade F. By the provision of the coils D, one being formed on each arm or wire of the supporting device, the ends of the wires are held yieldingly against the globe and owing to the wires being of a flexible material they may be disengaged from the shade or the globe, and by reason of the shade being held by the flexible wires all rattling is prevented and the use of set-screws is dispensed with.
While I have shown a particular detailed construction of apparatus embodying the features of my invention, it will be understood that the constructionof the same may be varied, if desired, to adapt the holder to various kinds of burners without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A shade-holder comprising a centrally-apertured disk, its outer marginal edge turned upwardly, inwardly and then downwardly to form a flange, the end of which approaches the face of the disk near the marginal outline of the aperture therein, said flange being proin cut-away portions of the flange upon the vided with cut-away portions and radial slits face of the disk, as shown and described. 1 formed in. saidflange between the cut-away In testimony whereof I hereunto aiiix my portions combined with arms having their insignature in presence of two witnesses.
