Letters Patent No. 79,018, dated June 16,11868; antedate'cl June 4, 1868.
OVEN-RACK FOR SHIP-STOVES.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY OONCERN:
Be it known that-I, F. L. A. M. SMITH, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Oven-Attachment; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates' to a new and useful device to be placed in the ovens of ships stoves or cabooses, for the'purpose of admitting of the dish containing the meat or other article to be cooked being retained in a horizontal position under the rolling ofthe ship or vess'el.
In the accompanying sheetot` drawings-'- Figure 1 is a transverse vertical section of myinvention, taken in the lin'e :v x, g. 2'.
Figure 2,' a plan or top view of the same; l
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A A represent the uprights, which have-suitable bases, B B, connected. by cross-rods C. To the upper Y parts of the uprights A A, horizontal bars D are attached, and these bars project from' the uprights at equal distances therefrom at the opposite sides, the bars D being parallel with the bases B B ofthe uprights.
The inner surfaces of 'the.uprights A A are grooved vertically, toreceive-the journals a, of a box, E, in which the meat-pan Fris placed, and retained in proper position by rods b passing through the pan. The journals a a project at right angles from `the ends of' the box, near its Iupper part, and they rest upon pins c e, which pass horizontally through the uprights, at a greater or less height, according to the height required for the box, the uprights having a series ci' holes made through them to admit of this adjustment ofthe pins.
The device` above described is placed in the oven of a. ships stove or caboose, and it will. be seen that the be); E,.in consequencel of being suspended as shown, will maintain a horizontal position under the rolling ofthe ship, the stove or Caboose being placed lengthwise with axis of the ship. The fere-and-a.f`t rolling or pitching of a ship isnot of any material consequence, and hence no provision need be made against it; the siderolling is what occasions the dilhculty in cooking, and which is fully obviated by my invention.
The bars D D prevent the vdevice from tilting over in the oven, when the boxE is elevated considerably between the uprights A A, as shown in iig.l 1. Y
The frame which supports the box E, as well as the box itself, may be constructed of cast iron. The meat-pan F may be of sheet iron. 'v
I am aware that patents have been granted for ships stoves hung in frames, so that their position will remain unaltered during the rolling' of the vessel, but my device may be used with the same advantage in the oven of an ordinary stove. I
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Y 1. 'The adjustable box E, containing a meat-pan F, suspended on journals a, to uprights A A, all con structed, arranged, and operating substantially as described. V
2. The grooved uprights or standards A A, provided with'a series of holes, through which a removable pin, c, is passed, for sustaining the journals or trunnins a a, of box E, substantially as and for the purpose described. Y
3. The application of the bars D to the frame in which the box E is suspended, to prevent the tilting or tipping over of the frame within the oven, substantially as `set forth. v
The above specification of my invent-ion signed by me, this 9th day of October, 1867.
F. L. A. M. SMITH.
