TRUSS- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 788,663, dated May 2, 1905.
Application filed July 21, 1904. Serial No. 217,482.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARIs MENAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trusses, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention has relation to improvements in trusses; and it consists in the novel construction of truss more fully set forth in the specification and pointed out in the claim.

Fig. 7 is an enlarged front elevation of one of the pads, and Fig. 8 is an elevational detail showing the looped arm of the pad in section and the spindle about which the same is swung.
The object of my invention is to construct a truss which shall be self-supporting, remaining in position without the use of straps, bands, and similar appliances, one in which the pads may be adjusted to produce variable pressure against the parts directly supported by them, and one possessing further and other advantages better apparent from a detailed description of the invention, which is as follows:
Referring to the drawings, 1 1 represent two fiat-bowed members or sections, composed of resilient material, such as metal or hard rubber, and adapted to snugly but yieldingly embrace the waist-line of the patient, the forward positions of the members having depending extensions 2 2, which terminate in cylindrical spindles or bearings 3 3. The rear ends of the bows l 1 are united by a coupling-plate 4, provided with a groove 5 for receiving the adjacent ends of the bows, the inner surfaces of the latter being flush with the adjacent face of the plate to form a continuous and smooth surface of contact with the body of the wearer. The plate 1 is provided with longitudinal slots 6, through which pass the stems 7 of the clamping-nuts 8, the bows being thus capable of adj ustment according to the waist-measure of the patient.
Adapted to swing about the spindles 3 are the trusspads 9, the same being provided with forked ends 10, looped about the spindles and spanning a ratchet-disk 11, rigidlycarried on the spindles between said looped ends 10, the outer face of each pad being provided with a springpawl 12, which engages the teeth of the ratchet. The teeth of the ratchet are disposed in a direction as to allow rotation of the pad about the spindle inwardly, the pad being locked against outward rotation by the pawl, so that in the event the patient should wish to adjust the pressure of either of the pads against the parts affected he may do so by rotating the same through the required angle toward the body, Fig. 5, the pawl automatically locking the pad against outward rotation. The bows 1 1 are resilient and snugly embrace the body, gripping them selves about the waist sufliciently to make the truss self-supporting.
I do not wish to be limited to the precise details here shown nor to the material or the number of pieces of which the truss may be composed, as all these may be departed from without in any wise affecting the nature or spirit of my invention.
The bows 1 1 form an open waistband, which is self-supporting, and while here shown as built up of two sections coupled by a plate it is obvious that a single band may be substituted in lieu thereof.
Preferably the pads 9 may be coupled by a strap or band 13, as shown, the opposite ends thereof being passed over buttons or knobs 14.
