SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 787,359, dated April 18, 1905.
Application tiled September 10,1904. Serial No. 223,984.
Be it known that l, Josemi DELAXCY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bueyrus, in the county of Crawford and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Vrench, of which the following' is a specification.
'lhis invention relates to that class of wrenches employed for operating upon round objects, such pipes.
'lfhe object is to provide a novel and simple structure of this character that has a powerful g'ripping action, will operate in a conlined space, and is not only reversible, but may be provided with interchangeable parts, so that its range of usefulness can be greatly enlarged.
rlhe preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a side elevation of the wrench. Fig. Q is a longitudinal sectional view therethrough. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional View on the line 3 of Fig. l. Fig. s is a similar view on the line l t of Fig. l.
Similar reference-numerals indicate corresponding' parts in all the ligures of the drawings.
ln the embodiment illustrated a stock 5 is employed, one end of which is adapted to form a handle, the other end being' enlarged into a jaw-head G, that tapers toward its free end, said tapering sides being' serrated or toothed and one being' straight, while the other is curved. The head is bifurcated, and slots T, located longitudinally in the opposite sides of the stock, extend to the bifurcation. Associated with the head is a swinging' jaw S, having a right-angular extension in the Vform of a shank 9. located in the bifurcation of the head and secured therein by means of a pivotscrew l0. 'lhejaw has its inner face serrated, l as shown at ll, and the shank is likewise prol vided with a toothed face 1Q. A leaf-spring 13 is secured to the shank 9 by suitable means as, for instance, a screw llt-said spring being' arranged to extend longitudinally into either of the slots and beingheld in place by a keeperpin l5, that bridges the slot and is secured to i the stock. The walls of both slots are prol vided with openings 16 for the reception of D the keeper-pin.
ln using this device the jaw S is swung backwardly sutliciently to permit the introduction of a pipe or other article between the sameand t-he rear Vface of the stock-head. This swinging' movement bends the spring '13, and there- Vfore puts tension thereon, so that when the jaw is again released it is swung backwardly and into engagement with the article. The stock is then turned in the usual manner or is held, the article being gripped between the opposing jaw-faces. 'lhis structure has a powerful grippingaction and, furthermore, a pipe located close to the lloor or in a similar conlined space can be engaged and operated therewith. The wrench can be readily reversed by re-l moving the swinging jaw, turning the saine, and again securing it by the pivot-pin. ln this case the spring' is located in the opposite slot and is held in place by the keeper-pin l5, which is also changed, as will be evident. The wrench may furthermore be given a particularly great range or lield of action by su pplying' therewith jaws of different sizes, which can be substituted for that shown. ,lhe purpose of placing the spring in the groove is to get it out of the way, where it will not pinch the hand and will not break otl' or become deranged when the wrench is thrown down.
From the foregoing it thought that the construction, operation, and many advantages of the herein-described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art without further description, and it will be understood that various changesl in the size, shape, proportion` and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrilicing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. ln a wrench, the combination with a stock, of a swinging jaw pivotcd to the stock at one end, a leaf-spring secured to the jaw and slidably extending longitudinally along' one side of the stock, and a keeper extending transversely of the stock and across an intermediate portion of the spring, Said spring having such intermediate portion slidably bearing against the keeper.
2. In a Wrench, the combination with a stock having a tapered bifurcated head provided with serrated faces, said Stock also having longitndinally-disposedslots in its opposite sides, which slots extend to the bifurcation, a swinging jaw having a stem located and pivoted in the bifurcation of the head, said jaw being reversible, a leaf-spring secured to the stem and adapted to be arranged in either of the slots, and a detachable keeperpin for bridging the slots over the spring.
3. In a pipe-wrench, the stock shaped at one end to form a handle and having its other end enlargedinto a jaw-head, Whichis tapered JOSEPH DELANGY.
