ZENO KELLEY. OF NEW BEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 78,673, dated June 9, 1868.
tlfl'm it W idetrieiarsrri new r w TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: y I
Be it known that I, ZENo KELLEY, of New Bedtovd,in the county of Bristol, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and dseful Improvements in llarpoons; andI do hereby declare that the l w g a full, clear, and enact description there of, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked t'hereon, which form a part of this spe cilieation, in which-.-
Figure 1 is a plan view of my harpoon. I
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. I, v
The letter A represents the shaft of'my'harpoon, and is formed, two sections, a and d, 0 having a hole in its lower end, in which' the upper end of section is made lit.
The section dis reduced in size from the point a to the end that connects it with section 0. The object of this reduced portion of d is to receive the slide e, which is allowed to play hetween'the point sand the adjustable shoulder t.- Betweenthe shoulder tand slide ea spiralspring is placed, the object of which will be lxei-eafter seen. v I
E represents the harpoon-head, which fits in a socket at the lower end of section 12.
In the neck at the harpoon-head which enters d, as above described. a percussion-cap, o, is inserted, the head itself being filled with gunpowdc n v p i I In order to explode the powder by the agency of said cap, the following devices are used: First, the crossbar 9, which is pivoted in slot 12. The said bar may he so constructed as that its lower end will be flush. with the side of the harpbon, so that it wi'i'l givenoresistonoawheaeenteningthe.whale.thenunirer en glpf V y being made to project sufliciently far above the section 11 as that's, cord attached to said section will draw the said bar at right angles to the harpoon, and, by its resistance, prevent the whole 'from' escaping. The bar 9 has on its upper edge the pin 1', the cflice 'ofwhich will be hereafter seen.
V represenijs' the hammer which explodes the cap. The said hammer is provided with a cylindricalrod, j,
which extends in the direction of bar g, as seen in fig. 2. Near the endof'suidl'od the pin a is inserted, the
said pin serving the purpose of keeping in place the metal plate m. J
The plate m, it will he observed, has a hole near its'inner end, which is intended for theadmission of pin 5 whem the harpoon is prepared for striking a whale. I it represents a spiral spring, which is placed directly behind the hammer V, and designed by its action to give the hammer suflicient momentum to explode the cap.
When preparing to strike a whale, the f llowing operations are to be observed: Theharpoon-headbeing charged with powder, the plate 1 must be pushed back until the pin 11 will enter the hole in said plate. In pushing back plate m, the cylindrical rod j, with hammer V attached to it, will be drawn back by the action of pin a. The drawing back the hammer V will compress the spiral springhand keep it in position to act on the hammer when required. Cords now being inserted through the holes in slide e, the harpoon may be thrown by hand, or, if desired, section 0 can be inserted in a gun, and the' harpoon shot into the whale. -When the point of the h,arpoon has penetrated the fish as far as the lower end of bar g, the said end will be forced out, the pin a" released from the hole in m, and spiral spring B, being left force against the cap 0 to explode the powder in the harpoon-hcad E.
The sections 0' and 01 will be uninjured, and can he used again. I
Figure 3 represents the iron breech-pieceL, with an elliptical spring, f, attached to it, which can beplaeed against the shoulder to break the force of the recoil when a gun is used to discharge the shaft.
It will be remarked that a balLmay be inserted in the head E with the charge of powder; and furthcn that a gum-elastic or spiral spring may be used for the breech-piece.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The hammer V, spring h, rod j, pin a, and bar g, incombination with head E, all purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I chi; my
free to act, will drive the hammer V with sufiicient aignatnreiii presence of two witnesses.
