| PETERs cauoroumo.. wAsumsYoN u c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD BUCKMAN AND ALEXANDER BUGKMAN, OF EAST GREENBUSH, NEW YORK.
., Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 855638, dated January 5,1869.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDWARDBUGKMAN and ALEXANDER BUCKMAN, of East Greenbush, in the' ceunty of Rensselaer and State ot N ew York, have invented a new and improved Repeating Toy Gun and Pistol; and we4 do hereby decla'fre that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which.`
Figure 1 represents a sectional side view of a repeating toy pistol constructed according to our improvement, and Fig. 2 a plan view ot' the same.
Similar letters ot' reference indicate correspondingparts in both figures.
Y This invention consists in thenovel arran ge-- ment of a magazine and plunger in relationA to each other and to the lock, stock, and barrel of a toy gun or pistol, whereby pense, pellets, or other projectiles may be fed to and ejected from the barrel by the 'cooking and letiug o of the hammer.
In order that others may understand' the construction and operation ot' our invention, we will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings.
A is the stock, B the barrel, C the hammer,
and D the trigger, of a toy pistol, all constructed and arranged substantially after the manner of such parts commonly used upon reward by a spiral spring, f2 The follower a is guided by a. pin, e, which passes transversely and laterally through it and through curvat'e'd slots g g cut in the sides of the magazine E. This pin e projects beyond the said grooves g g and terminates in knobs h h, by means of which the backward movement of the follower a is effected.
F is a plunger, of cylindrical or other suitable form, and arranged to slide within the breech or rear portion of the boreofkthebarrel B. This plunger F is operated by the hamlmer C, and is hinged or connected thereto by means of a connecting rod or link, c, passing through the rear extremity of the said plunger' F and secured to about the central portion of -the said hammer, so that when the piece is cocked the forward end of the plunger is withdrawn behind the communicating opening of the magazine E. The hammer C is actuated by a mainspring, G, arranged within the highest portion of the stock A. This mainspring G is composed of indiarubber or otherelastic material, and is connectedv at one end to the upper part of the hammer (l by means of a loop, t, andA at,the other end to a fixed pin, k, `secured in the front part of the stock A, so that the cocking'gofthe hammer increases the distance between the vsaid points of connection and causes a tension of the said spring.
-Ls a friction-pad, of india-rubber or other elastic substance, secured to the upper side ofithe inner surface of the barrel and prtg'ectiug into the bore directly over the point where the magazine E'opensfinto the barrel, so that the projectiles fed intov thebarrel by the follower a. are successiv y forced against this pad I and retained th reby, regardless of any discrepancy of size, until ejected by the plunger F.
Thefeather-spring m itis preferred to construct of india-rubber or other cheap elastic material, for aiding in the red uction of the costv ot' the apparatus.
When the magazine is to be charged the vfollower a is forced back behind the opening b by sliding back the pin e within the slotted grooves g, whereupon the said magazine may be filled through theopening b with pease, pel lets, or other missiles, which, upon the releasement of the follower, will be retained therein or fed into the barrel from the opposite end of the magazine. The piece is cocked in the 0rdinary way, the act of which withdraws the plunger F by means'of its connection with the hammer C untilV the said plunger clears the less as to whether the said inissile'be of sufficient size to fill the bore or of less dimension. Upon the pulling of the trigger D the hammer C is released, and is drawn forward by means of the mainspring Gr, and in its forward motion drives before it the plunger F, which ejects the uppermost missile with a degree of force proportionate to the strength of the spring.
That is here claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
l,1. The arrangement ofthe magazine E, plunger Ehammer C, spring Gr, and trigger D with relation to each other and to the Stock A and barrelB substantially as shown and described.
2. The curvilinear magazineE, arranged and operating in combination with the pad I substantially as shown and described.
