IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED POCKET-KNIFE AND P ISTOL.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 49,784, dated September 5, 1865.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, A. J. PEAVEY, of South Montville, Waldo county, State of Maine, have invented a new and Improved Alarm Pistol- Knife; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a longitudinalvertical section of thisinvention when cocked and ready for firing. Fig. 2 is an edge or face View of the same with the hammer down.

This invention consists in the arrangement of a small barrel and suitable mechanism for exploding the charges within the handle of an ordinary pocket-knife in such a manner that the pistol attachment does not in any way interfere with the ordinary use of the knife, and the whole can be conveniently carried in the pocket. The hammer is combined with the mainspring, trigger, and trigger-spring in such a manner that by the act of raising the hammer the triggenis released and allowed to follow the action of the trigger-sprin g, which throws the same in an inclined position and causes its tail or inner end to form a prop for the hammer. By pullingthe trigger thisprop is withdrawn and the hammer comes down with great force upon the nipple.

In order to use this device as an alarm, a cord is tied to the end of the trigger, thence drawn through a hole in the butt-end of the handle, and then tied to the latch of a door, or to some partof a window, or secured otherwise in such a manner that the trigger is pulled if the door or window is opened.

A represents the handle of an ordinary pocket-knife, to which the knife-blade B is fastened in the usual manner by a pivot, a.

Secured on the side of the spring 12 which acts on the knife, and between the side plates of the handle, is the barrel O, the external shape of which is square, so that it can be fitted neatly in its place. This barrel is muzzle-loading, and its chamber communicates through a channel, 0, with the nipple d, which is secured near the butt-end of the barrel by means of a screw-thread, or in any other suitable manner.

The caps placed on the nipple are exploded by the action of a hammer, H, which is connected to the front end of the barrel 0 by means of the pivot a. It is held down upon the nipple by means of the mainspringf, which bears on a lip, g, on the under edge of the hammer, nearits pivot a. When the hammer is down it bears on the tail end h of the trigger t and holds said trigger up in a recess between the barrel 0 and the spring b of the knife. Said trigger is pivoted to the side of the barrel, and it is subjected to the action of a weak spring, 1', which has a tendency to bring the same in the position in which it is shown in Fig. 1. Whenever the hammer is raised against the force of the mainspring the trigger is free to follow the action of its spring 11, and the tail h of said trigger is turned up against a shoulder, j, at the lower edge of the hammer, as shown in Fig. 1. When in this position the tail of the trigger forms a prop for the hammer and sustains it in an elevated position, and when the trigger is pulled the hammer comes down with sufficient force to explode a cap that may be placed on the nipple d.

The trigger may be pulled by hand, or, if the pistol is to be used as an alarm, a cord may be secured to the end of the trigger and drawn through a channel, Zr, in the butt-end of the barrel. By securing the knife in some appropriate placein a room and tying the end or the cord to the door-latch or to a Window the triggerwill be pulled in case somebody at-. tempts to open the door or to raise the window and the charge of the barrel is exploded.

If desired, the knife-blade may be stuck into the casing of the door, so that the door, on being opened, strikes the trigger and explodes the charge.

I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The trigger it h, spring t, mainspringf, and hammer H, with projections g and j, all constructed and arranged as and for the purposes herein described.
