Description

' giant 181226 gstrnt ffip Letters Patent No. 78,671, dated June 9, 186-8,
IMPROVEMENT IN SHEBPSHEARING TABLES.
ttt'e stllthlllt ttftmh in in this filters sum in?! mating part in it: $81112.
TO WHOM IT'M-AY CONCERN-2 Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. JONES, of Orangeville, in the county of Trumbull, and State of Ohio,- have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheep-fihearin'g Tables; and I do declarethe following to be a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawingsfand to the letters of reference marked thereon, and making part of this specification, in which- I Figure 1 is aback view in perspective, and Figure 2 is'a sidezelevation. v The nature of my ihvention is to construct an apparatus that will enable the operator to easily place the sheep upon it, to hold the sheep securely thereon, and avoiding nearly all danger of cutting the sheep while being shorn, with ample facilities for changing the position at the sheep when necessary, and at the same time to serve as'a WOOlnbOX-, v i To enable others skilledin the art to make and'use, I will now proceed to describe, my invention, and name its various parts.
Care inclined legs, supporting the stand K, at the front end of which is secured, at its centre, by means of the hinge L, the table B, supported in a horizontal position 'by the foldingvleg M. A A are sides or leaves, secured ordinary hinges tot-he table B, and retained in'a vertical'position, when "necessary, by the hook G and staple H forming an open box. F F are straps, with which to secure the hind legs of the sheep. D is a curvedblock, in which the sheep rests while being shorn, E are spring supporting-rests, attached to the outer edges of the leaves A A, and engaging at their lower ends with the notches J on the legs G 0.
Having thus describe tithe construction of my invention, I will now pr'oceedto describe the method of using I the same, premisiug, however, that the leaves are hooked together in a vertical position, and that the movable leg M is folded under thetable B, which isltilted forward. The sheep is then brought to the apparatus with its hind parts near the box, the operator raises its fore parts by placing his leftha'nd under its neck, when it will back into the box, next placing his right hand onthe upper part of the box, and pressing on the box and 'sheep at the same time, the box assumes a horizontal position, with the sheep lying in-it; the movable leg M serving as a prop,.keeps the table in its place. The operator then secures the hind legs of the sheep with the straps]? F to the sides of the box A A, and shears the wool from the head and neck of the sheep, pressing the wool into the space between the block D and the body of the sheep; he then secures the strap I around the neck of the sheep, and disengaging the hook G from the staple H', the leaves A A will fall apart and down, until the ends of the spring supporting-rests E E engage with the upper'notohes on the inclined legs G C, in a position which facilitates the shearing of the sheeps belly, after which he disengages the strap from the farther hind leg, and placing his right hand on the sheep,'rol ls it toward him, and at the same time with the left withdraws the supporting-rest E from the upper notch; it slides dow'n the leg 0, and engages with the next lower one, when the shearing of that side of the sheep is completed. The operator then goes to the'opposite side'of the table, and disengaging the strap from the leg of the sheep on the opposite side, draws the-sheep toward him, and securing the other hind leg as before, completes the shearing inthe manner described ;'he then releases the sheep, and the wool may be remoyed.
What I claim as niy invention, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1. The tilting-table B, with the ,folding leg M, 2. The spring supporting-rests E E, in connection with the notches J in the legs C C. 3. The bed B, provided with leaves A A, secured in position by the hook-G and staple H. 4:. The block D, in combination with the straps I and 1 all operating in the manner described, and for tf n. I
e purposes se or 1 WM. 0. JONES.
