Description
S. L. COLE. Gas Burner.
No. 78,578. Y Patented June 2, I868.
SETH L. COLE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent .No. 78,578, dated June 2, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN GAS-BURNERS.
Bilge gtljrhlllt numb It in flgisc ii-Mitts 33mm nut mating put at ti e same.
To ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, SETH L. COLE, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain novel and useful Improvements in the Mode of Regulating the Adjustable Shield or Cap which Protects the Flame from a Gas-Burner or Jet; and I hereby declare the nature of my said invention, and in what manner the same is to be performed, as particularly set forth in and by the following statement, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are lettered to correspond with and form a part of he specification. v
Figure 1 represents the arljustable cap A, raised nearly to its highest point.
Figure 2 represents the adjustable cap A at its lowest point. A
While the gas is being turned nearly off by the cock B to the smallest possible flow or taper, as shown at fig. 1, the cap A is raised by means of the ratchet-gear c and d, which is secured to, by means of a screw, and forms a part of the cock B, which regulates the flow of gas.
When the cap A is at its highest point, it effectually protects the minutest taper or flame ofgas at the nipple or top of the burner from the action of the wind, and when the top or cock 1.- is turned as shown at fig. 1, it allows a small portion of the gas to escape through a small groove, which passes entirely around the midlllc of the top for that purposen v The gas is shown at full height 01' lie-ail, with the cap A drawn down to its seat at the base of the burner, fig. 2; hence I believe the above mode of operating the cap upon the burner, by means of the cogged bar 0 and coggerl wheel at, or any other mechanical device that will give the desired parallel vertical motion to the cap A, to protect the flame at the apex of thejet or burner, to be new and useful. Therefore,
\Vhat I claim as new and useful, and what I wish to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-' Adjusting the cap A upon the jet or burner by means of the cogged bar a and ratchet-wheel d, or a section thereof, or by any device that will cause the cap to move up or down, by simply turning the stop-cock B, which regulates the flow of gas to the jet or burner, for the purpose substantially as described and shown in the drawings.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name in the presence of two witnesses.
SETH L. COLE.
Witnesses;
JAMES P. McLEAN, ABRAHAM TALMADGE.
