S. ElJATHEWS, OF MEGHANIGSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters'latent at. 78,305, dated Ma 26, 1868.
IMPROVED GAS-REGULATOR.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, S. F. MATHEws, of Mechanicsburg, in the county of Cumberland, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Gas-Regulator and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enablethose skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification. I
' The object of this-invention is to provide means of governing and controlling the flow of gas from the main pipe in a house before it is distributed to the burners;
And it consistsin arranging an adjustablethiinble on the end of a gaspipe nipple, the position of which thirnble is regulated by the pressure of the gas, and determines the quantity which is allowed to flow through to the burners, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
The drawing representsa longitudinal section of the apparatus, showing the-parts of which it is composed, and the manner of'their arrangement.
A is the body of the governor, containing the nipple-tube.
B is the nipple-tube.
C is the case, which screws into the governor A, forming a gas-chamber, D. v
E is a th-imble, which slides over the endof the nipple-tube so as to freely play thereon, but the extent of its movement is controlled by the screwf," which' works in a slot in the tube 13.
g is an orifice through the'thirnhle'E, which corresponds in size with'an orifice in the tube B.
h is a spiral spring attached to the thimble by the screw 1', and to the governor A.
The power of this spring is barely suificient to draw back the thimble when the pressure of the gas diminishes, after having extended it. I
The pressure of the gas acts against the head of the thimble at j.
c When the gas flows to the burners under the desired pressure, the orifices at y will correspond or register, as seen in the drawing.
Should the pressure increase, the thimhle will be forced outward on the tube, and the orifice in the thimble wiil pass from or over the orifice in the nipple-tuhe, and the aperture for the discharge of the gas will be dimini shed in" size accordingly.
The stop-screwfwill :prevent the'thiznble from entirely cutting off the gas.
When the pressure of the gas diminishes, the tension of the spring will draw thethimble back to its first position. v
No gas can escape into the chamber D, except through the aperture g, and as the size of this orifice is governed entirely by the pressure of the gas, it will be seen that the instrument is aperi'ect regulator of the flow, and consequently the result is a great saving in the consumption of gas.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. The nipple-tube B and the thimhle E, constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as and for the purposes described, in combination with a gas-pipe. Y i
2. The body of the governor A, the case 0, tube B,thi'n1ble E, and spring h in combination, forming agas-i regulator, substantially as shown and described.
The above specification of my invention signed by me, this 21st day of February, 1868. G
