UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE...
HANNIBAL WV. RAPPLEYE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
REGULATOR FOR GAS-BURNERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 369,960, dated September 13, 1887.
Application filed April 7, 1887. Serial Nev 233.96). lNomodcl.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HANNIBAL W. RAP- PLEYE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Regulators for Gas-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to so construct an automatic pressure-regulator for gasburners and like purposes as to facilitate the fitting together of the parts, to provide for readily governing the action of the device, and to restrict the opening movement of the valve. This object I attain in the manner which I will now proceed to describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pressureregulator constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of part of the device.
The frame of the regulator consists of an upper inlet branch, A, a lower outlet branch, B, and two hollow arms, a and b, the whole forming an open frame, in which is contained the casing of the regulator, the latter comprising a lower shell, d, and an upper shell, d, between which is confined a diaphragm,f, preferably of cloth so prepared as to be impervious to gas and proof against deteriora tion thereby, although a diaphragm of metal or other available material may be used instead ofthe cloth, ifdesired. The lower shell of the regulator-easing has a hollow projection, g, seated in a socket, g, on the outer frame, suitable packing being interposed to prevent leakage at this point, and the upper shell has a threaded stem, 71 to which is adapted a nut, it, having a conical upper end seated in a socket in the upper portion of the outer frame, so that by turning said nut the casing of the regulator may be elevated or depressed, it be ing understood that the casing is not free to turn. By reason of the conical end of the nut bearing at the point on the frame, friction is reduced, and the nut is permitted to swing to some extent laterally to accommodate itself to any want of truth in the alignment of the regulator-casing. The inlet branch A of the frame communicates, through a passage, a, in the arm a of said frame, with the chamber begas in its flow passing through an opening, 2', to which is adapted a conical valve, m, having a stem, m, connected to the diaphragm f. The arm I) of the frame has a passage, b, which communicates with the discharge branch 13 of the frame, and across the upper end of said passage extends a tubular plug, D, the bore a of which communicates with the chamber beneath the diaphragm f of the regulator, and also through ports a with the passage b in the arm 12 of the frame.
The plug D is threaded externally for adaptation to threaded openings in the arm I), and said plug should be notched, squared, or otherwise constructed at the outer end for the reception of a suitable implement whereby it may be turned, the inner end of the plug being reduced in diameter and fitted to a bushing, p, which is adapted to an opening in the lower shell, (Z, of the regulator-casing, suitable packing being used between the bushing and shell and between the bushing and plug, if desired.
Above the diaphragmf of the regulator is a cup or receptacle, 8, which, in the present instance, is confined to the diaphragm by a thumb-nut, 8, adapted to the threaded upper end of the valve-stem m, the latter having beneath the diaphragm a flange or collar, 2).
The upper shell, d, of the regulator casing neath the diaphragm f of the regulator, the
has an opening, 2, to provide for theintroduction of the weights into the receptacle sin setting the regulator, and so as to permit a free flow of air into and from the space above the diaphragm f as the latter. falls and rises. In order to prevent such a drop of the valve m as would cause the straining of the diaphragmf when gasis cut ofi' from the regulator-chamber or the pressure therein is very much reduced, I place beneath said valve a transverse stem, w, a portion, 10, of which is recessed or made eccentric, as shown, so that by partially turning the stem the downward movement of the valve may be restricted to any desired extent.
It will be evident that by the use of the nut h and plug D the parts can be readily fitted together or taken apart, and the ready inspection of any part of the regulator is permitted.
A laterally-projecting neck secured to the regulator-casing and adapted to but removable from an opening in the discharge-arm of the frame may, if desired, replace the movable plug; but the use of the latter is preferred.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of the outer frame, having hollow arms forming gas-passages, with the regulator casing detachable from said frame, and having a valved opening, through which it communicates with the inlet-passage, and a laterally-projecting hollow neck fitted to but removable from an opening in the dis charge-p'assagaall substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the outer frame, having hollow arms forming gas-passages, with the regulator-casing-seated upon said frame at one end, and having at the other end a conical nut, the point of which bears upon the frame, all substantially as specified.
3. The combination of the outer frame, having arms forming gas-passages, the regulator- H. W. RAPPLEYE.
