awuamoz J. NEEDHAM.
HIGH PRESSURE GOVERNOR VALVE.
APPLICATION HLED AUG-13.1919. 1,373,906.
' Patented Apr. 5, 1921.
Jsepiz Neeai'imm 1, h film 'e s l: limits it s were JOSEPH NEEDHAM, OF NEW YORK, N. I.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH Nnnn rair, a
- citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in High Pressure Governor-Valves, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same.
This invention relates to high pressure governor valves and particularly to devices of this class designed for use in connection with my improved method of and apparatus for compressing a delivery fuel gas, shown and described in an application for Letters Patent of the United States filed by me of equal date herewith; and the object of this invention is to provide a pressure governor and control valve of the class and for the purpose specified which is simple in construction, efficient in use and which will control the supply of fuel gas through the delivery of service lines at a positive and set pressure independent of the pressure in the gas supply service lines and independent of the pressure and volume in use in the plant, and independent of the number of the burners or gas using appliances to which the is supplied, the pressure at each burner or gas using appliances remaining the same at all times; a further object being to provide a pressure controlling valve of the class specified which does not employ diaphragms,
springs or other complicated mechanism.
which are a frequent source of trouble in valves of this class, and which is especially designed to prevent chatter in the operation thereof and is quick to respond and;
smooth and even in action, and susceptible to the slightest variation, and cannot be put out of adjustment; and with these and-other objects in view the invention consists in a valve of the class and for the purpose specified, constructed as hereinafter described andijclaimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters ineach of the views. and in which:
Figure 1 1s a side view of my improved pressure governor and controlling valve Specification of Letters Patent.
Application ined au ust. 13, 1919.
Patented 5, 1%231. Serial No. 31? a2.
Fig; 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and, i Fig. 3 a sectional detail of the construction shown in Fig. 2 and on an enlarged scale.
In carrying my invention into effect, I provide a valve casing 5 oi the usual general form and provided at one side with an inlet opening (3 and at the opposite side with a discharge opening 7, and the casing 5 is provided with an interior horizontal partition member 8 which divides said easing into an inlet chamber 9 and an outlet or discharge chamber 10. i
The valve casing G is provided at the top thereof with an interiorly threaded neck 11, and I also provide a casing 12 having a threaded neck 13, which is screwed into the neck 11 of the valve casing 5 and which is provided with a detachable cover 14: having a centrally threaded neclr 15 closed by a detachah y threaded cap 16.
I also employ a tubular piston rod '17, one
end of which is threaded and passes through the neck 15 and is provided within the cap 16 with a set nut 18 and the end of which, within said cap 16, is closed by a threaded plug 1% I alsoprovide a plunger valve 20 which operates to open and close a port or passage 21 in the partition 8 of the valve casing 5, and said valve provided wit cylindrical body 22 which pa. es loose movably through the neck 1 of the cl u 12, and within the cylindrical body or the valve 520 is a piston chamber the top of which is closed by a threaded plugfii and the piston rod 17 passes loosely or mov-nbly through the threaded plug 24 and through. the chamber 22, andthe lower end thereof which closed by a threaded plug 25 fits in and is vertically movable in a socket 2G atthe bottom of the piston chamber 23.
I also provide a plurality of weights 27, 28, 29" and 30. as shown in the drawing,
which are placed in a chamber 31 in the casing 12, and through which the piston rod 17 passesand the weight or weights -2T3U rest on the top of the plunger body 22 of the' valve 20, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and control the movement of the valve 20, as will be readily understood.
T he piston rod 17 is provided within the chamber 23 with a piston 32 havinga port iii) lOO
or passage 33, and the rod 17 isprovided f below said piston with a corresponding port or passage 34, and in the use of this device oil or lubricating material is passed through the hollow piston rod 17 and through the port or passage 3-1 therein into the chamber 23 and is free to pass through the port or passage 33 in the piston 32, and this forms a dashpot which permits, or insures, the free and easymovement of the plunger valve on the rod 17 and prevents what is known as chatter in the operation of valves of this class and also insures responsive action under all conditions of pressure, or changes therein, and a smooth, even and positive action of the device as a whole.
In the use of this device the inlet port 6 of the valve casing is in communication with the delivery or supply pipe or line of the apparatus, which delivers the fuel gas to the burners or appliances for using the same, and this gas enters the chamber 9 in the bottom of the valve casing at the pressure equired for the burners or other gas consuming appliances, and if this pressure rises abovethe degree required, the valve 20 will be raised and the over-pressure will be discharged from the d scharge side of the valve casing, as will be readily understood, and as shown and described in the application here inbefore referred to, and by a proper use of the weights 27 to 30, the pressure necessary to operate the valve 20, as above described, may be determined and regulated at all times and under all conditions.
In the accompanying drawing and tore going description I have shown and described the details of construction which 1' prefer in carrying my improvement into effect, but it will be understood that the invention described and claimed herein is not limited to such details of construction, and changes there n and modifications thereof may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages; and while I have shown and described my improvement as particularly designed for use in connection with an appa ratus for supplying high pressure fuel gas to burners or burner appliances, it will be understood that my invention is not limited to this use and the governor valve shown and-described herein may be used for vari ous other purposes and in connection with various other forms of apparatus in which it is desired to control the pressure of liquid or gaseous substances.
