To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, VERNER F. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey,- have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Temperature-Re ulators and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others ,skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

If the temperature in the room becomes higher than the degree to which the regulator is adjusted, the tube 26, which is made'of a metal easily aected by heat, expands and the increased length of the tube allows the follower rod 23 to-slide up, this slidingbeing caused by the spring 28 which is-stronger than the spring 32. This raising of the follower rod pulls up the rod 22 and conse uently that end of the lever 21, and drops t e other end containing the cup4 34 and pulls the rubber` ring 35 away from the boss or seaft'36, allowing the compressed airor other fluid to pass through the duct 45 and out through the portion 46, to which'the pipe 12 is connected. This will cause the diaphragm valve,"or other mechanism to which the regulator isA at-lat their marginal l tached, to operate and shut oif the heating 70 The spring 28 rests down against a Washer medium. When the temperature goes down, the tube 26 contracts and forces the rod 23 down which allows the spring 32 to force that end ofthe lever 21 dow-n, as in Fig. 2. The ring 35, being of rubber or soft material, comes in contact with the seat 36 and when it is sufficiently compressed, to make a tight joint, the pin 37 engages the bottom of the stem 38 and lifts the valve 39 against the pressure of the spring 40, and the pressure in the pipe 12 can pass out through the vent 42.
To regulate the apparatus the tension on the spring 28 is altered, and this is accomplished by having the end of the rod 22 provided with a coupling 4.7 on the other end of which is a rod 48 passing through a stuffing box 49a. On this rod 48 is affixed an index hand 49 which registers on a scale 50 so that a very nice adjustment can be secured. The end of the rod 48 is provided with a squared portion 51 to receive a handle or key, and when this is turned, the screw-threaded rod 22 raises or lowers the follower rod to regulate the tension on the spring 28, the follower rod being prevented from turning by the ribs 29.
In Figs 6 and 7 I illustrate a modified form of this regulating device which ismore adapted for handy use, vwhere the bottom of the casing of the regulator isv not easily seen. In this modified structure the shaft 48 is provided, instead of the hand 49, with a lever 52 which is slotted at 53, and the head 54 of a rod 55 is held in engagement with it by C means of a spring 56,'the other end of the spring fitting against the bearing 57 on the casing. The rod 55 is screw-threaded where it passes through the bearing 57, and is provided with a hand 58 which registers on a scale 59 attached to the bearing 57 and a squared portion 60 on the rod 55 permitsthe turning of the shaft, or rod, bymeans of a screw or handle.
It will be evident that this apparatus can be used to regulate the admission of a refrigerator medium in refrigeration, and also to operate a Ventilating apparatus.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is y In a temperature regulator a casing having inlet and outlet ports, the outlet port having a vent therein, a valve in the vent having a stem thereon', a valve for closing the outlet port and engaging the stem and opening the valve in the vent, a lever for operating the outlet valve, a follower rod, a tube secured to the casing and encircling the rod and having its free end abutting against the end of the follower rod the tube contracting and cx-y panding according to temperature changes, and a'head on the followerrod, the casing having a recess to allow the head to slide, slots on the opposed sides f the recess, ribs on the head of the followe'r rod working in the slots, a washer secured in the recess, a spring between the follower rod and the washer, and a second spring between theI washer and the lever. i
