IMPROVEMENT IN GAS-BURNERS.
Specilicatiou forming part of Letters Patent No. 58,606, dated October 9, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. CooLIDGE, of Boston, in the county ot' Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Gas-Burner, ot which the following is a full clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying' drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved gasburncr. Fig. 2 is acentral vertical section through the same. Fig. 3 is a View ot' the tip detached.
My invention consists in a gas burner the oritiee at the tip ot' which may be contracted or expanded as required, thus particularly adapting it for use in connection with machines for making gas from naphtha or other light hydrocarbons, where it is desirable to increase the size ot' the orifice of the burner when a poor quality of gas is being' used.
To enable others skilled in the art to under*- stand and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
In the said drawings, A is the burner, the portion a ot' which is made slightly tapering, and over this portion is fitted an exterior tube, I), which surrounds the tip c. This tip is made tapering, and is split, so that it will spring apart, as seen in Fig. 5. The upper portion ot the tip c is enlarged, and the lower end is provided with a screw-thread, which tits into a corresponding screw-thread on the inside of the burner A, a pin, d, passing through the exterior tube, b, and the slit in the tip c, so that the tube and tip will turn together, while the .tip is permitted to move vertically within the tube b, and thus as the tube b is turned in one direction the tip is raised, projecting its upper end farther outvfrom the top ot' the tube b and allowing it to spring apart, and thus increase the size of the orice et as required, while on turning the tube bin the opposite direction the tip is withdrawn, exposing less of the oriice above the top of the tube I), and at the same time causing the inclined sides 5 to press against the inside of the tube b and force the two portions of the tip together, so as to diminish the size ot' the orice. The spring of the split portion of the tip c, while it causes the inclined sides 5 to press against the inside ot' the tube b and prevent the leakage ot' gas at l not be attained by the use ot' the ordinary stop-` cock, thus particularly adapting this burner for use in connection with machines for making gas from naph tha and otherlighthydrocarbons, where the quality ot' the gas frequently varies, a rich quality ot' gas requiring a burner with a smaller orifice, while when the gas becomes mixed with too large a proportion ot air a burner with a larger orifice is required. I do not, however limit myself to its use in connection with these machines, but intend to apply it wherever it may be found desirable; neither do I confine myself to the exact construction here' shown, as it is evident that it may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention. For instance, the tip may be secured permanently to the burner, and the exterior or confining tube, b, be. moved up and down by hand, or the exteriorl tube, b, may be attached permanently to the end of the gas-pipe and have a screw-thread cut in its interior, into which the split tip may be screwed.
VhatI claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
rIhe split tip o, in combination with the exterior tube, operating substantially as described.
