IMPROVEMENT IN GAS-BURNERS.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN I Be it known that I, A. C. RAN D, of the city, county, and State of New 1ork,-have invented a'new' and useful Improvement in Gas-Burners and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description'thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference beirig ha d to the accompanying drawings forming part ofjthis specification, in which Figure lre'prese'nts a central vertical section of my improved gas-burner.
Figure 2' is a similar view of a. modification of the same;
Figure 3 is a similar view ,ofanother modification of the same.
Figure 4 is a plan or top view of the latter modification.

This invention relatesjto a new manner ofjconst'ructing gas-bothers of that class in which the gas issues through a long narrow sljot an d' consists in making the width ofthe aperture adjustable, so that a larger or smallerjet may be discharged from theburner, as may be desired. i
The quali-ty-of the gas is subject to considerable variation, which is caused partly hy changes oftemperaturefby the quality of the material from which the gas is produced, and by various other causes; and it is therefore a desideratum to have the size of thejot under control, so that a desired light may be obtained' A, in the drawing, fig. 1, representsa gas-burner, in which one check, d, of the slot a is formed by theend o'i' ascrew, I); which can be screwed near to or further from the opposite fixed cheek 0', whereby the width of the slot is decreased or enlarged at will.
B, fig.-2, represents a gas-burner; in which one cheek of the'slot a is formed by a sliding block, d', which can; 'by means of a screw, g, that is swivelle'd either-in the other, eheekc, or in aprojection formed on the outside ofthe burner, be moved to or i'ro m the check c, at will, with the aforesaid result.
0, in figs. 3 and 4, represents a similar burner as.fig:2, with the exception that the movable cheek :2 works on aspirdl horizontal'track, e, which is eccentric to the hurner, and which is formed on a-sleeve,f, that turns around the burner, and which, as it is turned, causes the block d to be moved towards or away from the opposite fixed cheek c, as may be desiredytvith the sameaforesaid result.
The track on the sleevef may either be formed by-a slot, as shown, into which a pin projecting from the block (Z fits or in any other suitable manner. v V
Other modes of adjusting the movable cheek may be employed, with equal success,
