PATENT OFFICE.
FIRE-EXTINGUISHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 785,610, dated March 21, 1905. Application filed June 15, 1904. Serial No. 212,626.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS F. HANDLY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented'certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Extinguishers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
.This invention has relation to fire-extinguishers, and to that class generally known as chemical apparatus, and the object of my invention is to provide novel means for supporting the acid-receptacle within the tank or vessel containing water and bicarbonate of soda.
Briefly described, the invention comprises, in connection with the tank containing water and bicarbonate of soda, a sealing device for supporting the acid within the tank, this sealing device being secured to the underneath face of the closure-cap of the tank, and in connection with said sealing device I employ novel means for supporting the acid receptacle therein and a gravity-lock whereby when the tank is inverted the acid-receptacle will be released and permitted to discharge its contents while the same is floating upwardly in the water and bicarbonate of soda.
All of the construction, with various other details entering into my invention, will be hereinafter specifically described, and particularly pointed out in the claims, and, referring to the drawings accompanying this application, like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of an extinguisher constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the extinguisher inverted. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective View of the sealing-disk. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view of the same, and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the clamping-arms.
To put my invention into practice, Iemploy the ordinary and well-known type of tank 1, which is used in fire-extinguishers of this character, and upon one end of the tank is secured the closure-cap 2, which is provided with handles 3 3, whereby the tank may be readily carried and inverted when desired. Centrally upon the underneath face of the closure-cap I provide a depending screw-threaded pin 4, upon which is secured the sealing device 5, which is provided in its top with a screwthreaded aperture 6, whereby the sealing device may be secured upon the depending pin 4.
The sealing device is preferably cylindrical in form and has its lower end contracted slightly, as indicated at 7, and in the end of said cylindrical sealing device is formed a circular recess 8, in which the neck 9 of the acidreceptacle 10 is adapted to be supported. In the head 11 of the sealing device I provide a plurality of recesses 12, and in the periphery of the annular head 11 I provide the vertical slots 14, which extend from the recesses 12 to the top of the annular head 11. In these recesses 12 and the slots 14 are mounted the clamping-arms, one of which is clearly illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawings. The clamping-arms 15 are provided with a T-shaped head 16 upon their one end. The lug 17 ,forming one side of this T-shaped head, being cut away upon its end, is designated at 18 to conform to the periphery of the neck of the acid-receptacle, and upon the other end of the clampingarms is provided an inwardly-extending lug, which is globular in form, as indicated at 20, and the upper end of the clamping-arm is curved outwardly in an opposite direction to the lug 20, forming a curved end 21.
As shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, when the acid-receptacle is being supported within the sealing device the lugs 20 take into the recesses 12 of the sealing device and the lug 17 engages the neck 9 of the acid-receptacle, the clamping-arms being held in this position by an annular collar 22, which forms the gravitylock, and this collar is supported upon the lugs 23, forming one side of the T-shaped head 16 of the clamping-arms.
When it is desired to use the extinguisher, the tank 1 is inverted to the position shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and when placed in this position the collar 22 falls by gravity and engages the curved ends 21 of the clampingarms, one of these arms being provided for each recess 12 of the sealing device, the collar forcing the curved ends 21 into the slots 14 of the head 11 of the sealing device, and as the lugs extend into the recesses 12 the T- shaped head 16 of each clamping-arm will be forced outwardly, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, releasing the acid-receptacle and permitting the same to float upwardly, discharging the acid and permitting the same to mingle with the water and bicarbonate of soda.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, the acid-receptacle is provided with a flange upon the neck portion of the receptacle, whereby the lug 17 of each of the clampingarms will engage the shoulder formed by said flange and firmly support the receptacle in engagement with the sealing device and hold the same in an upright position as long as the fire-extinguisher is supported vertically.
While I have herein shown in connection with my improved fire-extinguisher only three clamping-arms, it will be observed that any number of these arms may be used for supporting the acid-receptacle, corresponding recesses and slots being provided in the head of the sealing device to support these clamping-arms, and while I have herein described the mechanism in detail it will be'observed that in the construction of the invention various changes may be made in the details of construction, and I do not care to limit myself to the construction herein shown, and reserve the right to alter the same in any manner that may be permitted by the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is-- 1. In a fire-extinguisher, the combination with a tank, a closure-cap secured upon said tank, of a sealing device secured to said cap, said device having arecess formed therein to receive the neck of a receptacle, clampingarms carrying balls seating in sockets in said sealing device, means carried by said arms for supporting a receptacle in said recess, means for locking said arms in engagement with said receptacle, and means for unlocking said arms when the tank is inverted.
2. In a lire-extinguisher, the combination with a tank, a closure-cap secured upon said tank, of a sealing device secured to said cap, said device having a recess formed therein to receive the neck of a receptacle, clampingarms mounted in slots in said sealing device, said clamping-arms being formed with globular lugs engaging recesses in said sealing device, T-shaped heads formed integral with said clamping-arms and adapted to engage the neck of said receptacle, an annular collar supported upon said T-shaped heads, and means whereby when said tank is inverted said arms will be released from engagement with the receptacle.
