UNITED, STATES PATENT OFFICE.
REUBEN D. WIRT, OF INDEPENDENCE, MISSOURI.
PORTABLE FIRE-EXTINGUISHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 628,058, dated July 4, 1899.
Application filed February 28, 1898. Serial No. 671,987. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, REUBEN D. WIRT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Independence, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and usef 111 Improvements in Portable Fire-Extinguishers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention has relation to a portable fireextinguisher of that class in which carbonicacid gas is combined with water or some other extinguishing fluid when it is desired to use the device.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which shall be simple of construction, inexpensive of production, and by means of which the stopper closing the gas-containin g vessel will be positively held in place, thus retaining said vessel in an upright position and preventing it emptying its contents into the water accidentally.
With this object in View the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be'hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a Vertical sectional View illustrating my invention, and Fig. 2 is a detail perspective View of the bottle-yoke.
In said drawings, 1 denotes the main recep tacle or reservoir, adapted to contain an alkaline solution and provided with a hermetically-sealed top formed with a central apertured boss 3, having a screw-threaded bushing 4. Depending from the cover is a hanger 5, which may be attached to the cover in any suitable manner.
6 denotes the bottle or vessel, adapted to contain sulfuric acid. This bottle is provided with a yoke 7, the central portion of which is formed with a loop 8, that surrounds the neck of the bottle, and the limbs of which are formed with bearing-eyes 9, that engage the cross-bar 10 of the hanger.
The parallel limbs of the yoke 7 on each side of the loop 8 are encompassed by the sliding sleeves a a, which when slid up to the loop 8' hold it firmly about the neck of the bottle and when slipped in opposite directions from said loop allow the limbs to be sprung apart to enlarge the loop, so that it maybe sprung over the flange on the mouth of the bottle.
11 denotes a stopper for the bottle or vessel, and 12 denotes a stopper-extractor, which passes through the bushing and the apertured boss and has its screw-shaped end embedded in'the stopper of the bottle. The shank of the extractor is provided with a socket that receives the inner end of a set-screw 13, which Works through the bushing, thus preventing the vertical movement of said extractor. It is evident that by this construction the stopper cannot possibly be forced out of the bottle by gases nor jarred out by the rough handling of the extinguisher, which is subject to much jarring and joltin g when it is mounted upon a truck.
'When it is desired to mix the contents of the bottle with those of the reservoir, the setscrew is loosened, and by drawing the extractor upward the cork is removed from the neck of the bottle, thus allowing it to invert itself and empty its contents.
One of the essential points of the invention is the yoke, which by engaging theneck of the bottle and the shoulders immediately below the neck forms a strong bearing, so that should the stopper bind in being drawn out by the extractor there will be no danger of the bottle becoming detached from the bracket, as would be the case were the bearings secured to the bottom of the bottle and engaged with the cross-piece of the bracket, as the strain now comes entirely upon the shoulders of the bottle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination in a fire-extinguisher, of aremovable cap, a rectangular wire hanger depending from said cap, an endless-wire yoke hinged at its lower ends to said hanger and formed at its upper end with a central loop 8 adapted to encompass the neck of the acid vessel and the sliding sleeves a 00 enc0m passing the parallel limbs of said yoke, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination in a firesextinguisher, of a hanger and an endless-wire yoke hinged to said hanger and formed with parallel arms and acentral loop adapted to be contracted about the neck of the acid-receptacle, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, in a. fire-extinguisher, of a hanger, an endless-Wire yoke hinged to said hanger and formed at its free end with independent semicircular loops, lying in the same plane, and means for adjusting said loops with reference to each other, as and for IO the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
REUBEN D. WIRT.
