UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J. F. HERBERT SUGG, OF SABULA, IOWA.
BOTTLE ATTACH M Em.
SlE'IlCIFICA'JJION forming part of Letters Patent No. 359,412, dated March 15, 1887.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,v J. F. HERBERT SUGG,of Sabula, in the county of Jackson and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Bottle Attachment, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the application of my improved bottle attachment to a bottle. Fig. 2 is a plan View, the stopper D having been removed and Fig. 3 shows the bottle in position for pouring, with the attachment automatically removed from the mouth of the bottle.
4 Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the label, which will notify him of the nature of 5o rium when the bottle-stopper is removed, so
the contents of the bottle.
My invention consists of a clipadapted to embrace the neck of a bottle, and provided withaw-ire loop, and in'the combination therewith of atwo-armedlever pivoted on the loop, and carrying at one end a plate for indicating the nature of the contents of the bottle and at the opposite end a weight for cou'nterbalane ing the plate, the weight and the plate both being arranged below the point of suspension.
The clip A is made of spring material, and adapted to partly encircle the bottleneck B. At points equally distant from the center of the clip A are secured the ends of a doubled '.or looped wire, G, which is curvedoutward and extends upward slightly beyond the mouth of the bottle.
Upon the middle part, c, of the wire loop 0 is pivoted a lever, E, formed of a wire bent spirally in the middle of its length to form the spiral spring H,which is loosely placed on the loop 0, the ends I) c of the lever extending in opposite directions, the end I) being secured to the plate F, the end 0 being secured to the counter-weight G. The plate Fand weight G are below the fulcrum of the lever E, so that the lever is always in a state of stable equilibthat when the bottle is tipped the lever will maintain its position and allow the contents of the bottle to be poured out. WVhen the bottle is in a vertical position, and its stopper thus holding the spiral springHunder tension in place, as shown in Fig. 1, the plate F stands vertically and presses against the edge of the stopper, and when the stopper is removed the plate F is thrown forward by the spiral spring and projects over the mouth of the bottle. The falling of the plate in this manner and the noise made by the striking of the weight against the collar on the neck of the bottle calls attention to the plate and the word poison, and after the removal of the stopper, if the bottle is allowed to remain in a vertical position, the plate will continue to cover the mouth of the bottle and display the warning word. When the bottle is tipped in the act of pouring out its contents, the lever E will swing on its fulcrum and the motion of the plate will attract attention.
Should a mistake be made in dispensing the contents of the bottle, the dispenser will be notified of his mistake when he attempts to return the stopper to its position in the bottle, as the plate F will intervene, and must be re moved before the stopper can be replaced. In addition to these advantages the attachment will prevent drinking from the bottle in the dark by mistake. as the attachment will interfere with the direct use of the bottle in that way, and the click made by the plate F in striking the neck of the bottle will also indicate the dangerous nature of the contents of the bottle and prevent accidents.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 7 As an improved article of manufacture, a
bottle attachment formed of the clip A, the
lever-support 0, attached to the clip, the weighted lever E, provided with the spiral spring H, and the plate F, carried by the lever, substantially as shown and described.
