DEVICE FOR WITHDBAWING- CLOSURE-CAPS FROM. MILK-BOTTLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 1, i915.
' Application filed May 6, 1914. Serial No. 836,615.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN OARNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pawtucket, in the county of Providence and Stateof Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Withdrawing Closure-Caps from Milk-Bottles, OIE' WlllCl1 the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices for withdrawing the paste-board caps or seals from closed milk bottles, and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of the parts, substantially as hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In uncapping devices of the general character referred to the means usually employed consist of an independently removable base or frame carrying a pin or member having its lower or free end arranged to puncture the cap. In such former devices the user holds the same in place or position with one hand whilemanipulating the pun}?- thus constructed the device, together with the cap itself, are liable to drop from the container and become more or less soiled and infected with foreign matter. former devices, too, are comparatively expensive to manufacture.
In my improved bottle uncapping device the construction is extremely simple and inexpensive; it is adapted to be permanently connected to the bottle, the latter being of well-known construction; the wire bail or frame of the device is adapted to swing through a circular arc and carries with it a permanent spearshaped member adapted, when punctured through the cap, to bear on the bottle when the frame is swung downwardly, thereby acting as a lever for forcing the cap from the bottle, the cap be- After pouring from the bottle the desired quantity of its contents the device can be readily swung back to its normal position, the user at the same time guiding the cap to close the bottles outlet, the operation being repeated as often as desired or while any of the contents remain in the bottle. The frame also serves as a convenient bail or handle for Such portion of a bottle or jar, showing the uncapping device in various positions; Fig. 2 is a front view of the device, detached from the bottle; and Fig. 3 represents a modification;
B indicates the neck portion of a milkbottle or jar of usual construction having its upper end I) enlarged peripherally and provided with a recessed inner seat 12 through which the mouth or outlet 6 extends. A removable closure cape of suitable material, as paste-board, is mounted air tight on said seat, all substantially as usual in containers of this character. The same cap or closure members are not, of course, well adapted for reuse after the containers have been refilled.
The device A, forming the subject of my invention, has a frame or bail member formed from a length of comparatively stiff wire bent to an inverted Ushape; the same having oppositely disposed parallel arms a a united at the top by a tie or bridge 6 on which the cap-impaling spear member (Z is loosely supported. The lower ends a of e by means of a bend 6 shown in Fig. 2,
or by tubular collars 6 Fig. 8.
The puncturing member d is permanently connected to the said yoke or bail and swings with it from the pivots a and is also capable of independent axial movement on the tie or bar 6 of the frame. The lower end portion of member d has a reduced longitudinal shank part d limited by the upper and lower shoulders (Z d and having the extreme lower end terminating in the spur or spear s.
The manner of operation is substantially as follows: The fluid-filled container B having the cap unseating device attached thereto is normally ready for instant service. When not in use the bail may rest against the wall of the bottle, as indicated by dotted lines at 0; now, in order to withdraw the cap 0 from the bottle, the user swings the spear-carrying bail on the pivots or trunnions a at the same time swinging the spear d on its pivot until its end 8 engages the desired part of the surface of the cap, followed by a further swinging movement of the bail, which action forces the spear through the cap and impales it on the shank d substantially as indicated at position 1;
a to the normal position 0 in case the bottle is to be refilled the continued arc movement of the members,
say to thedotted lineposition 2, causes the spear d tobear firmly against the upper end and resealed. V I claim as my invention and desire to sea cure by United States Letters Patent V 1. A device for uncapping milk-bottles or 7 other analogous containers, the same con- 'sisting of a metal bail or frame having a transverse tie or bar terminating in oppojsitely disposed arms extending at substantially right angles therefrom, a spear-like piercing element permanently supported and axially movable on said tie, the free end portion of said spear adapted, when in use, to be pressed through the cap to withdraw cap impaled thereon, and means for securing the latter from the container and retain said the frame to the container, said securing 7 means having the frame pivotedthereto and or seals from the mouth of milk-bottles or like containers, the combination of a bail Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Washington, D. 0.
capable of swinging arcuate movements thereon. i
2. In a device for Withdrawing the caps or frame having downwardly extending arms arranged to bepivotally connected to the outer neck portion of the contalner, said bail-having a tie integral therewith uniting the upper portion of said arms and-capable of swinging across the mouth of the bottle, and a cap-piercing element carried'by said tie arranged for indefp'endent turning movement on the latter, 7 set forth. p p
8 The combination of a bent bail or frame, band having the frame pivoted h re o a ap e o b e ma co n t to theneck of a container,a member arranged to J pierce and remove the cap or closure from the container, said piercing member being mounted to turn axially on a piercing memberpermanently pivoted to and movable bodily with the bail, said piercing member also capable of independent movement on the bail, and means for centralizing or positioning the'piercing element on thebail, r
