Description

(No Model.)
T. G. MAIER.
BOTTLE STOPPER.
PatentedDec. 2-8, 1886.
'INVENTOR WITNESSES:
ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THEODORE G. MAIER, OF CAMDEN, NEW JERSEY.
BAOTTLE-STGOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 355,096, dated December 28, 1 886.
Application filed May 10, 1886.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THEODORE G. MAIER, of Camden, county of Camden, and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Stoppers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which Figure l is a side sectional elevation showing the stopper in position in the mouth of the bottle. Fig. 2 is a side sectional elevation showing the stopper removed from the mouth of the bottle. Fig. 3 is a front elevation.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawin s.
llhe object of my invention is to provide a simple and secure stopper for the mouths of bottles for containing eifervescing liquids.
My invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
The hollow elastic stopper A is open at opposite ends, and the lower end thereof converges to receive the neck a of the inner head, I). The outer end of the elastic stopper is pro vided with a flange, c, which rests upon the top of the bottle-neck when the stopper is in place in the mouth of the bottle. Theouter head, d, of the stopper is provided with a boss, 6, which is inserted in the hollow elastic stopper A. The inner head, b, and outer head, d; are apertured axially to receive the wire f, which issecured in the inner head, I), and
passes loosely through the central aperture of the outer head, and is provided with an eye, g. The eye 9 is received in the slot of an eccentric lever, B, and a pivotal pin, h, passes.
Serial No. 201,706. (No model.)
through the eye 9 and through the eccentric lever B, the eccentric of the lever being arranged relative to the heads b 01, so that when the larger side of the eccentric is turned to- I in the slotted end of the eccentric lever B, and
the lower ends of its parallel sides are bent inward toward the neck of the bottle and re ceived in eyes j, formed'in the wire D, surrounding the bottle-neck. The yoke 0 passes through the eccentric lever at the side of the eye 9, and upon the side of the pivot h opposite the larger side of the eccentric of the lever B, so that when the lever is turned in the operation of forcing the stopper into the bottle and expanding it, it will be rigidly held by the yoke 0, so as to enable it to force the stop per firmly down upon the bottle-neck and expand it laterally, so as to completely fill the mouth of the bottle and prevent the escape from the bottle of either liquids or gases.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An elastic stopper having an eccentric for forcing it into a bottle-neck, means for attaching the eccentric, and a wire connected to said eccentric at one side of its pivotal point and passed through and connected to the lower end of the bottle-stopper, substantially as set forth.
