T. G. HOGLE.
' METALLIG VESSEL CLOSURE.
No. 476,745. Patented June 7,1892.
WITNESSES:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS C. HOGLE, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
METALLIC-VESSEL CLOSURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 476,745, dated June 7, 1892.
Application filed October 16, 1891.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS C. HOGLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Met-allic- Vessel Closures; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a metallic vessel designed for a fire-extinguishing apparatus, and more especially to the construction of an apparatus of this sort which consists of a liquid-containing vessel for holding a liquid solution adapted to extinguish a fire and having another vessel adapted to act as a cover for said liquid-con tainin g vessel, resting upon the same, and Which may also be used for throwing the said solution upon the fire.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the various parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l is a side elevation of my improved apparatus, and Fig. 2 a vertical section of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Like letters refer to like parts in each of the figures.
My apparatus consists of a lower vessel A, conical in form and preferably constructed of sheet metal, provided with a handle C and having at a suitable distance from its upper or small end an ogee bead having a convex portion E and a concave portion E, and arranged within the concave portion Eand extending entirely around the vessel a ring-packing of felt, asbestus, cotton, or other suitable material and having the top or mouth open. \Vithin this vessel is contained a liquid solution for extinguishing fires, as shown in Fig. 2. The other part of my apparatus is the conical vessel 13, provided with the handle 0 and having arranged within its bottom portion, the packing D, also of felt, asbestos, cotton, or other suitable material. The two ves- Serial No. 408,965. (N0 model.)
sels A and B are preferably constructed with relation to each other, so that 13 forms the apex of a cone of which A forms the base, and of such relative size that B forms a cap for A, and its bottom D rests upon the mouth of A covering the same, for excluding the air and preventing evaporation of the contents, and its rim incloses the ring-packing D and is in contact therewith. I prefer to use either felt or asbestus for this packing substance, but any other suitable material may be employed; and I'also prefer that the vessel 13 shall [it closely around said ring-pack ing D and in engagement therewith, as this affords a further security against spilling the contents or loss thereof by evaporation.
My apparatus is intended to be placed in some convenient place about a building and to be charged at all times with said liquid solution,(or to contain a quantity thereof stored in vessel A,) and in case of fire it is seized by the handle and carried to the most convenient place, the solution then poured from vessel A into vessel B, from which it is dashed upon the fire by hand until the flames are extinguished. It will now be seen that the apparat us is always ready for instant use and is economicallyconstructed and easily operated.
What I claim isv The combination, with a conical vessel A, provided with a handle and formed near its smaller end with a bead with concave and convex portions, a packing in said bead, and a smaller vessel B, provided with a handle, the two vessels being so constructed relative] y to each other that the vessel B forms the apex of a cone of which the vessel A forms the base, and its rim embraces the packing in the bead of the vessel A and a packing in the smaller end of the vessel B and resting against the smaller end of the larger vessel, all substantially as and for the purpose specified,
In testimony whereof I affix my signatu re in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS C. I-IOGLE.
