Referring to the type of extingulsher illustrated in Figure 1, the numeral 1 1nd1- I cates a metal container having a base 2 upon which the same is adapted normally to rest, and a rest 3 upon which it is adapted to be set when inverted for use. Inside the container 1 is a secondary container 4:, the upper part of which is provided with a threaded flange 5 for a sealing ring 6. The r1ng'6 1s adapted to secure in position a th1n str p of lead foil or similar easily'perforated material 7 to seal the container 4:. Inside the container 4 is a weight 8, the lower surface of which is flat so as to rest normally upon the bottom of the container 4. The upper surface of the weight 8 is tapered as shown, so that the central portion thereof may protrude through the upper end of the c0ntainer 1 when the sealing sheet 7 is ruptured i by, means of a series of points 9 carried by the weight on its upper side.' The ring 6 is provided with upright standards 10 between which is a base 11 fora bottle or jar 12, sa d standards being also provided with bands 13 to support the jar laterally. The ar 1 is provided with a loose stopper 1 1 which drops out by gravity when the devlce is inverted, the bands 13 serving to hold the jar from dropping when the device is in this position. The container 1 is provided with the usual outlet 15.

In this construction two tanks or containers 17 and '18 are provided, one of which, 17 for instance, may be provided the other with a supply of carbon tetrachloride. Air pressure is maintained in the tanks by'means of pipes 19 which extendsubstantially to the bottoms thereof.- A

The operation of the device in either form as above described will, it isthought, be apparent to those skilled in the art to three-way valve 20 of ordinary construction y which .thesame appertainsj Vhen the container or tank 1 is inverted the device il lustrated in Figure 1 operates, in so far as the sodium bicarbonate and acid are concerned, in the same manner as extinguishers of well-known construction now 'on the market. Simultaneous with the inversion of the tank, however, the carbon tetrachloride is liberated into the solution and this when it becomes heated by. the fire to be extinguished generates gas in great volume which serves very rapidly and expeditiously to extinguish the flame.
