PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL N. STEINART, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN MCPHERSON, JR, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
' DOOR-SECURER AND ALARM COMBINED.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 784,637, dated March 14, 1905.
Application filed April 29, 1904:- Serial No. 205,478.
To (LZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL N. STEWART, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Door-Securer and Alarm Combined, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
IO This invention relates to improvements in devices for temporarily securing a door closed against its being opened from the outside, and especially to that class of such devices which may be quickly applied to any ordinary swinging door and are of a size to adapt them to be carried in the pocket, the object of the invention being to provide such a securing device with means whereby it may be readily adjusted for application to any door and to combine 2O therewith a suitable burglar-alarm, all being so constructed, arranged, and combined that a very light, simple, cheap, and inexpensive device is secured and which also has certain other new and useful features, all as herein- 5 after more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the device in position for use; Fig. 2, an eleva- 3 tion of the same when not in use and showing in dotted lines the diiferent positions of the parts; and Fig. 3, an edge view of the same, showing the manner in which the holding-plate and filling-strip are spread apart to fill the crack between the edge of the door and its jamb.
As shown in the drawings, 1 is a metal plate provided with laterally-extending integral spurs 2 atone end to engage the door-jam'b,
4 and pivotally secured to the opposite side of said plate near its opposite end by a rivet 3 is a supporting-plate 4 and a filling-strip 5 of thin spring metal between said plates. The supporting-plate 4 is bent at right angles near one end and extends laterally outward, forming an abutting ledge or stop 6 to engage the face of the door. If the door fits tightly in its casing, so that there is but a narrow crack between to place the device, the supportingplate 4: and strip 5 are turned on their pivot 5 to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig.
2 to allow the door to swing closed and the holding-plate held with its spurs against the inner face of the door-jamb and the door then closed, thus forcing the spurs into the jamb. When there is a wide crack between the door and jamb, only the supportingplate A is turned out of the way, and the strip and holding-plate 1 are spread apart, and any suitable wedge, as shown in Fig. 3, inserted between to hold the same apart, so that when the plate is held in place and the door closed the spurs will be forced by the door into the jamb. By then turning the supporting-plate 4: to bring its laterally-turned end adjacent to the face of 6 5 the door the same is securely held closed, care being taken to engage the spurs with the jamb at such adistance from its edge that the holding-plate will project far enough to allow the supporting-plate to be freely turned into line 7 therewith.
On the supporting-plate adjacent to its outwardly-turned end is secured an outwardlyprojecting stud 7, and on this stud adjacent to the plate is pivoted an arm 8, normally held in engagementwith an outwardly-projecting flange 9 on the end of the supportingplate 4 byaspring 10, coiled around said stud and secured at one-end to the stud with its opposite end engaging the arm.
When the device has been placed in position to secure the door, the arm 8 is turned up against the action of its spring into engagement with the upper edge of the laterally-extending end 6 with its upper end extending 5 over and beyond the said end of the plate and held in this position by a spring projection 11, formed by striking up the metal of the plate.
A loop 12 is formed on the free end of the arm 8 to receive a cartridge 13, and on the flange 9 9 is a small projection 1A, which serves as a firing-pin to explode the cartridge when the same is brought down upon the pin by the spring-actuated arm which is disengaged from its holding projection by the initial opening or inward movement of the door toward the abutment 6. If desired, small paper or metallic caps may be used instead of blank cartridges by leaving off the firing-pin or projection and plugging the 'loop to form a socket to receive the cap.
This construction combines in a very simple and compact device means for securing the door and means for giving an alarm, providing a device which is inexpensive to manufacture and of a size and weight adapting it to be carried in the pocket. The flexible filling-strip permits its being sprung away from the holding-plate and any suitable temporary filling put between, thus obviating the necessity of providing a number of filling-strips which would add materially to the weight and size of the device.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim is- 1. The combination with a holding-plate provided with means for engaging the doorjamb, of a supporting-plate carried by said holding-plate and provided with means forepposing the opening of the door, an arm pivotally secured at one end to said supportingplate, a spring to actuate said arm, and means on the said plate for holding said arm against the action of its spring in a position to be engaged and released by the initial opening movement of the door.
2. The combination with a holding-plate provided with means for engaging the doorjamb, of a supporting-plate pivotally secured near one end to the holding-plate and provided with means for opposing the opening of the door at one end and with a projection at the opposite end, an arm pivotally secured at one end to said supporting-plate, a spring to normally hold said arm in contact with the said projection, yielding means on the plate for engaging and holding the arm in a position to be engaged by the initial opening movement of the door and be released thereby to contact the projection with a blow, and means for holding an explosive in position to be exploded by the blow.
The combination with a holding-plate provided with means for engaging the doorjamb, of a supporting-plate pivotally secured near one end to the holding-plate, an abutment on the opposite end of said supportingplate to oppose the opening of the door, an arm pivotally secured at oneend to the supporting-plate near the abutment, a flange on the supporting-plate, a spring to normally hold the arm in contact with the flange, a spring projection on the supporting-plate to engage and hold the arm in a raised position with its free end extending over the abutment toward the door, and means on the arm for holding an explosive in a position to be brought into contact with the said flange.
4. The combination of a holding-plate, spurs on one end of said plate to engage the door-jamb, a flexible filling-strip pivoted at one end to said holding-plate, a supportingplate having a laterally-bent end forming an abutment and pivoted to the holding-plate with the filling-plate between, a flange on the supporting-plate near one end having a projection forming a firing-pin, a stud on the supporting-plate near the abutment, an arm pivotally mounted on the stud at one end and provided with a loop at its opposite end to receive a cartridge, a spring to actuate said y arm, and a spring projection on the supporting-plate to hold the arm in a raised position with its upper end projecting over the abutment toward the door.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL N. STElVART.
