Description

UNITED STnTEs PATENT Urraca LUGIUS II. EMMONS, OF NOBLESVILLE, INDIANA.
IMPROVED MOP-HEAD.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent NO. 7%?,4/34, dated June '3, 1868.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUcrUs H. Ein/rows, of Noblesville, in the county of Hamilton and State of Indiana, have invented new and use ful Improvement-s in Mop-Heads; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference bein g had to the accompanying drawing, 1n aking part of this specification.
This invention relates t0 the mode Ot' griping or holding the cloth in mop-heads, whereby it isinore readily and conveniently attached to the head without requiring to be handled by the operator.
The novelty consists in furnishing the head with hooks, and arranging the clamp in such relation thereto as that the mop-cloth may be griped and held firmly by simply turning the handle, without the necessity of stoopin g or handling the cloth.
Figure l is a side view of the mop-head. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate the saine parts in the several iigures.
The following description will enable skilled artisans to make and use my invention.
A is a piece of cast-iron, constituting part of the mop-head, and having the central por tion somewhat enlarged to form a nut for the purpose of making therein a female screw, through which the male screw B on the lower end of the handle C passes. The pieceAis also furnished with hooks D, securely fixed therein, as shown. Another piece of cast-iron, E, having its lower side rounded to conform to the curve of the hooks, is attached to the lower end of screw B in such manner as to allow the screw and handle to revolve freely, and at the same time so as to carry the piece E back and forth as the screw may be turned in piece A. The hooks D pass through piece E near one edge, and the rounded faceof piece E is notched or recessed to receive the curved ends of the hooks.
By this forni and arrangement of the hooks I) and piece E, I am enabled to gripe the 1n0p cloth and securely hold it between the hooks D and piece E by simply turning the handle so as to move the piece E toward the hooks. I can also release it by the reverse movement, without having to stoop or handle the cloth.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The piece A, furnished with the hooks D, and the piece E, arranged in relation thereto, and operated by means of the screw B, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
LUGIUS H. EMMONS.
Witnesses O. F. MAYHEW, HEZEKIAH CALDWELL.
