Be it known that I, HARRY S. Burns, a citizen oi the United States, residing at \Vebster (il'OVOS, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottles; and I do doclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in non-refillable bottles.
The object of the invention is to provide a bottle and a stopper for the same which will permit the contents of the bottle to be poured out, but which will prevent the refilling ot' the same without breaking some part of the bottle.
Vi'ith this object in view the invention consists of certain novel features oi construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be more-fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing is shown a vertical sectional view of a bottle and stopper embodying the invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 denotes the bottle, 2 denotes the neck of the same, the lower portion of which is bulged or globular in form, as shown at 3. Above said globular portion the neck is shaped to form an annular groove or recess 4, and above said grooved portion is a cylindrical extension 5, Forming the upper end of the neck. in the bulged or globular portion of the neck is arranged a check-valve 6, which is seated in the lower end of said globular portion, as shown, and thereby closes the bottle and prevents the refilling of the same. The valve 6 may be formed of rubber, glass, metal, or any suitable material, and is provided with an upwardly-projecting stem 7, which is adapted to slide upwardly or telescope into the lower tubular end of a guide-bar 8. In the side walls of the lower tubularend of said guide-bar are formed vertically'disposed slots 9, with which are adapted to be engaged laterally-projecting ment and preventing turning ol the same. A light coiled spring 12 is arranged on the valvestem 7 between the valve 6 and the lower end of the guido-bar, thereby normally holding the valve down in closed position.
The upper end of the guide-bar 8 is secured to a bar 13, which is connected to the lower ends of verticallydisposed hangers or supporting-bars 14, the upper ends of which are connected to a lrusto-conicalshaped battleplug15, which [its closely in the cylindrical portion of the bottle-neck. In the plug 15 is formed a central vertical discharge opening or passage 16. Below the opening 16 in said plug and supported by the hangers or bars 14 is arranged a glass bathe-plate 17, which is of less diameter than the bottle-neck.
Betweenthe battle-plate 17 and the bar 13 is arranged a flat downwardly-eurved leaf or ribbon-spring18, the ends of which engage the groove or recess t in the neck of the bottle, thereby holding the parts of the stopper in the said neck.
Above the upper end of the conical plug 15 and over the hole 16 is arranged a circular downwardly-curved battle-plate 19, said plate being supported above said plug by means of pins or bars 20. In the upper end of the bottle-neck, above the plate 19, is arranged a stopper 21, of cork, glass, or other suitable material, by which the bottle is sealed. The neck of the bottle, below the bulged or globular portion of the same, is of less diameter than the upper cylindrical portion ol the same, thereby permitting the valve ('3 to be inserted in the neck of the bottle and to seat itself against the sides 01 the bulged or globular portion 3, thereby closing the bottle at the top of the reduced portion 01 the neck.
After the bottle has been lilled the valve 6 and the parts connected thereto are pushed into the neck of the bottle until the ends of the spring 18 snap into the groove or recess 1. The valve 6 will by this time have been seated in the lower end of the portion 3 of the neck and will be held down by the spring 12. The stopper 21 is now placed in the upper end of the bottle.
When it is desired to pour out any 01'' the contents of the bottle, the stopper 21 is lirst removed, and as the bottle is tilted the liquid in the same will push the valve 6 upwardly against the tension ot' the spring 12 and pass around the same and out of the bottle. As soon as the liquid is all out or the bottle turned to an upright position again, the spring will closethe valve and prevent any more liqaid from being placed into the bottle.
Any attempts to raise or tamper with the valve 6 will be frustrated by the baflie plug and plates above the same. Should an attempt be made to withdraw the bafiie plug or plates from the bottle, the bar 13 will cause the spring 18 to straighten out, thereby firmly locking said parts in the neck of the bottle, which will be broken before these parts can be removed.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the prina check-valve arranged in said globular portion to close said reduced portion, an apertured frusto-conical baffle-plug arranged in the upper portion of said neck, battle-plates arranged above and below said plug, and means whereby said parts are locked against removal from the neck of said bottle, substantially as described.
2. In a bottle of the character described, the combination with the neck of the same, having a bulged or globular portion, a red uced portion below said bulged portion, and an annular groove or recess above the same, of a valve seated in the lower end of said globular portion, thereby closing the entrance to the bottle, an apertured frusto-conical baflieplug arranged in the upper portion of said neck above said globular portion, a battle-plate arranged above said plug, a similar platearranged below the same, hanger-bars connecting said cross-bar with said plug, and a downwardly-curved spring resting on said crossbar, the ends of said spring being adapted to engage the annular groove or recess formed in said neck, thereby preventing the withdrawal of the valve and the parts connected thereto, substantially as described.
