NON-REFILLABLE BOTTLE To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that L'hIIGUEL PEREZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Non-Refillable Bottle, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to non-refillable bottles and similar liquid containing receptacles and has for its object to provide a bottle which'cannot be refilled without breaking or otherwise mutilating the same so that any attempt to fraudulently substitute an inferior grade of goods to that originally contained in the bottle will be readily detected.
A further object of the invention is to provide a bottle including a stopper or closure having a depending canceling finger secured thereto and extended across the label of the bottle so that when the stopper is extracted the finger will cut or otherwise mutilate the label and thus indicate that the bottle has been tampered with.
A further object is to provide a tubular member or cap which surrounds the neck of the bottle and serves to protect and house the label, said tubular member being locked in engagement with the neck of the bottle.
A still further object of the invention is to generally improve this class of devices so as to increase their utility, durability and efficiency.
Further objects and advantages will appear in the following description, it being understood that various changes in form, proportions and minor details of con struction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a nonrefillable bottle constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view or' the same. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the bottle in inverted position. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 44 of Fig. 2 with the valve and valve-casing removed. Fig. 5 is a side elevation partly in section illustrating a modified form of the invention.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
The improved stopper or closure forming the subject matter of the present invention may be used in connection with bottles, jars and similar containing vessels and by way of illustration is shown applied to a bottle of the ordinary construction in which 5 designates the body of the bottle and 6 the neck, the interior walls of which are threaded, as indicated at 7.

tween the valve-seat and the interior of the bottle, as shown.
Engaging the threaded walls 11 of the sleeve 8 is a casing 12 having one or more longitudinal openings 13 formed in the side walls thereof and a plurality of openings 14 formed in the top of said casing and through which the liquid is discharged when the valve 15 is moved to open position. The valve 15 is preferably circular in form and normally engages the valve seat 9 so as to form a closure for the bottle.
Slidably mounted within the casing 12 is a guard or cap 16 which normally rests on the shoulder 17 of the collar 8 and forms a housing for the valve so as to prevent an unauthorized person from introducing a wire or other tool through the neck of the bottle in an attempt to elevate the valve and refill the bottle.
The exterior walls of the neck 6 are preferably tapered, as shown and are formed with oppositely disposed longitudinal seating grooves 18 for the reception of a label mutilating member, the latter being preferably formed of a single strip of metal 19, the intermediate portion of which is extended transversely across the stopper 20 while the opposite ends thereof are extended downwardly in the seating grooves 18 at the rear of the label 21.
The free ends of the mutilating fingers or arms 22 are bent upon themselves at 23 and thence extended upwardly in front of the label so that when the stopper 20 is extracted to permit the discharge of the contents of the bottle the arms 22 will sever or otherwise mutilate the label and thus indicate that the bottle has been tampered with.
Surrounding the neck of the bottle and bearing against an annular shoulder 24 is a sleeve or tubular member 25 preferably formed of glass and provided at its lower end with interior threads 26 for engagement with the correspondingly threaded exterior walls 27 of the bottle, there being similar threads 28 formed on the upper end of the tubular member 25 and engaging the threaded walls 29 at the mouth of the neck, as shown. The tubular member or sleeve 25 forms a housing or casing for the label 21 and also prevents an unauthorized person from bending the canceling fingers or arms 22 with a view to withdrawing the cork without mutilating d the label. As a means for locking the tubular member or sleeve 25 in position on the neck of the bottle the walls of the neck are provided with oppositely disposed V shaped locking recesses or grooves 30 adapted to receive the spring locking pawl 31 of a locking member 32, the latter being seated in the threads of the tubular member at the upper end of said member, as shown. It will thus be seen that the tubular member or sleeve 25 is free to rotate in one direction so as to permit the same to be positioned on the neck of the bottle without affecting the locking member 32 but when the tubular memher is rotated in the reverse direction the spring pawl 31 will engage the walls of the adjacent locking recess or groove 30 and prevent further rotation of said tubular member. If desired, a similar locking member 33 may be positioned on the lower or enlarged end of the tubular member 25 for engagement with a corresponding locking recess 34 formed in the adjacent threads 27.
The metal forming the mutilating member is preferably spaced from the top of the stopper 20 to form a finger piece or loop 35 by means of which the member may be conveniently grasped in the hand when it is desired to elevate the same preparatory to extracting the cork or stopper. It will thus be seen that an initial upward movement exerted on the finger piece 35 will cause the canceling fingers or arms 22 to engage and sever the label 21 and that a further movement thereof will elevate the mutilating member above the stopper so as to permit the same to be extracted in the usual manner.
After the stopper is extracted'the bottle is tilted to the position shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings which causes the valve to move by gravity to open position so that the liquid or other contents of the bottle is free to flow through the opening 10 and apertures 13 to the mouth of the neck 6, as indicated by the arrows in Fig. 3.
When the bottle is placed in upright or normal position the valve will automatically reseat itself so as to prevent an unauthorized person from refilling the bottle or introducing a wire or other tool through the neck of the bottle in an attempt to unseat the valve.
Attention is here called to the fact that the ends of the mutilating fingers are inclined or beveled and deflected laterally in engagement with the interior walls of the tubular member 25 so as to exert a spring pressure on said member and thus assist in locking the tubular member in position on the neck of the bottle.
In Fig. 4 of the drawing there is illustrated a modified form of the invention in which the walls of the neck of the bottle are disposed substantially parallel with each other instead of being inclined or beveled, as shown in Fig. 1. In this form of the device the canceling fingers or arms 22 are made relatively short while the upper end of the mutilating member is provided with a disk or plate 36 which forms a closure or cap for the stopper.
The bottles may be made in different sizes and shapes and the casing of the valve formed of metal, glass, porcelain or other suitable material.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed 3. A receptacle having a closure, label mutilating means extending transversely across the top of the closure, and a housing for the mutilating means.
4. A receptacle having a closure, label mutilating means extending transversely across the closure, a tubular member surrounding the mutilating means and forming a housing for the same, and means for locking the tubular member in position on the receptacle.
5. A receptacle having a closure, and a mutilating member extending transversely across the closure and provided with a depending label canceling finger.
G. A receptacle having a closure, a mutilating member extending transversely across the closure and provided with a depending label canceling finger and a housing surrounding the mutilating member.
7. A receptacle having a closure and provided with 0ppositely disposed seating grooves, label mutilating means extending transversely across the closure and seated in said grooves, and a housing for the mutilating member.
8. A receptacle having a closure and provided with oppositely disposed seating grooves, a mutilating member extending transversely across the closure and provided with depending label canceling lingers seated in said grooves, and a tubular member forming a housing for the canceling fingers.
9. A receptacle having a closure and provided with oppositely disposed seating grooves, a mutilating member extending transversely across the closure and provided with depending label canceling fingers seated in said grooves, a tubular member forming a housing for the fingers, means for locking the housing in position on the receptacle, and a finger piece secured to said member above the closure.
10. A receptacle having a closure and provided with exterior threads intersected by a longitudinal locking recess, a mutilating member extending transversely across the closure and provided with depending label canceling fingers, a tubular member surrounding the fingers and having its interior walls threaded for engagement With the threads on the receptacle, and a spring locking pawl carried by the tubular member and adapted to engage the locking recess in the receptacle for locking the tubular member on said receptacle.
11. A receptacle having a neck, a valve seated in the neck, a stopper disposed above the valve, a strap extending transversely across the closure and provided with a depending label mutilating finger, and a housing surrounding the neck.
12. A receptacle having a neck the exterior walls of which are threaded, a valve seated in the neck, a closure disposed above the valve, a tubular member having its interior walls threaded for engagement with the exterior threads of the neck, and a strap extending transversely across the closure and having its opposite ends interposed between the neck and tubular member and provided with terminal label canceling fingers.
13. A receptacle having a neck, aclosure seated in the neck, a strap extending transversely across the closure and provided with terminal label canceling fingers, a tubular member surrounding the fingers, and means for locking the tubular member in position on the receptacle, the terminals of said fingers being bent laterally in engagement with the interior walls of the tubular member.
