Description

PATENTED FEB. 21, 1905.

WRENGH. APPLICATION FILED MAY 13, 1904.

PATENT OFFICE.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 782,983, dated February 21, 1905.
Application filed May 13,1904. Serial No. 207,832.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK BENEDICT Mo- GOVERN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oil City, in the county of Venango and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates'to new and useful improvements in sliding-jaw wrenches; and the object of the invention is to produce a device which will be simple in construction and easily adjusted and securely held in an adjusted position by means of a series of ratchet-teeth upon the shank portion of one jaw engaging teeth upon the pivotal head, the said teeth being held in interlocked relation by means of one of the spring-actuated jaws.
My invention consists, further, in various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wrench. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the same, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates one of the jaws of the wrench having a shank portion A with teeth 0 upon one face thereof, and B designates a hollow chambered sleeve having a series of teeth B on the bottom wall of the recess or chambered portion thereof, which teeth are adapted to mesh with the teeth a upon the shank portion A. Mounted in the walls of said sleeve is a pin (1, and D designates the second jaw of the wrench havingashank portion D, and said jaw D has shoulders on opposite faces thereof and is pivotally mounted upon said pin C. V hen thus mounted upon the sleeve, the opposite faces of the jaw D are preferably flush with the faces of the sleeve, as shownin the sectional view, Fig. 3, of the drawings. The shank portion D of the jaw D passes between the )ro'ectin arms C of said sleeve, which arms are connected by a cross-piece E, the latter serving to limit the outer throw of the shankD. The tapering edge (Z of the jaw D is normally held in contact with the face of the shank A opposite the teeth (Z, and a spring F, secured at one end to the inner face of the shank D, bears against a cross-piece 6 between the walls of the sleeve and serves to normally hold said edge (Z with a slight pressure against the shank A suflicient to normally hold the teeth a in mesh with the teeth on the bottom wall of the recessed or chambered portion of said sleeve, whereby the jaws of the wrench may be held in adjusted position. The marginal edges of the sleeve, it will be observed by reference to the side elevation in the drawings, are made to conform to the outline of the shoulders (Z upon the sides of the jaw D, and the extreme end (Z of the jaw D projects for a short distance between the side Walls of the sleeve, as shown in said sectional view, Fig. 3, of the drawings.
In adjusting the wrench the operator holding the jaw A in one hand takes hold of the shank portion A of the handle and with the thumb grasps the bottom of said sleeve and by tilting the shank portion D against the tension of the spring thereon the edge (Z of the shank D will be thrown away from the shank portion A of the jaw A, which will allow the teeth a to be lifted out of engagement with the teeth upon the bottom wall of the sleeve, and said shank A may be moved freely through the sleeve for any adjustment of the wrencln It will be observed that the teeth on the bottom wall of the chambered portion of the sleeve are forward of the pivotal point connecting the shank portion of the'inner jaw to the sleeve and directly opposed to the lateral projection on said inner jaw, the teeth of the shank portion of the outer jaw being adapted to be held in engagement with the teeth of the sleeve by pressure of said projection upon the shank of the outer aw.
While I have shown a particular construction of wrench embodying the features of my invention, it will be understood that I may alter the same as to details, if desired, without in any Way departing from the spirit of my invention.
- Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A wrench having an outer fixed jaw, with a shank portion provided with serrations on one face thereof, a sleeve having a groove formed in the bottom of the chambered portion thereof, a pin carried by said sleeve, an inner jaw pivotally mounted upon said pin, said inner jaw having a lateral projection, teeth upon inner jaw upon the shank portion of the outer jaw, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK BENEDICT MCGOVERN.
