IMPROVEMENT IN' PLOUGH'S.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONGERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN KOFFEND, of Appleton, in the county of Outagamie, and State of Wisconsin,
have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ploughs;4 and I do hereby declare that the following -is a. full,
clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being-.had to the 'accompanying drawing, forming'part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side view o f the land-side and point of a plough to which my improvement has been attached, Figure 2 is a top view of the same.v Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved attachment'for ploughs, by means ofwhich thev land-side of the plough may be adjusted *toY cause the plo-ugh toV run deeper or shallower, according to the character of the soil to be ploughed, and which shall at thesame'time be simple in construction; cheap, easily adjusted, and readily applied to any plough, whether new or old; and it consists in Athe combination of an auxiliary, adjustable, pivoted land-'side with the ordinary land-side of the plough, as hereinafter-more fu'lly described. i
A is the land-side, and B is the point of an ordinary plough, to which the mould-board, handles, and other parts are attached, in the lordinary manner. I C is a land-side, which I prefer to make broader than the ordinary land-side A, and which lies along and is pivcted at its forward end to the said land-side A, at or near the standard, by a bevelled--headed bolt, as shown in iig. 2, and indotted lines in iig. 1. The iland-side C is so attached to the land-side A, that its outer side may be flush with the land-side of the point'and c'oulter, as shown in fig. 2. The rear part oiu the land-side C is connected to the rear part of the land-side A, by a. screivLD, which passes through an inwardly-projecting ear or ange, c', formed upon the said land-side C, and its former end is swivellcd to an inwardly-projecting ear or ange, c', formed upon the landside A, directly beneath the ear orange c', as shown in igs. 1 and-2. This is the construction I prefer for new ploughs; but in the case of old ploughs, it is generally more convenient to attach the adjustable land-side to the inner side'of the ordinary land-side A, as shoxvn at E, figs, 1 and 2. AIn this case the land-side E may be made narrower than' the land-side A, to which it is pivoted at its forward end bya. bolt and nut, and adjustably connected at its rear part by flanges or ears and a swivelled screw, lin the manner hereinafter described with reference to the landside C. It desired, the land-side C or E may be adjustably connected to the land Side A, by means of a bolt and nut, said bolt passing through a slot in the landside A, and through a. hole in the landside C or E, so as to clamp the said land-side securely in any position to n'hicliit may be adjusted, but I prefer the construction first described.
By this construction, by lowering or raising the rear part4 or heel ei' the adjustable land-side, the relative direction 'of the point is slightly changed, said point being made to tend downward, more or less, thus enabling the plough to be adjustedaccording to the character of the soil to be ploughed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as nemend desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination ot' a pivoted,. adjustable, auiziliary land-side with the ordinary land-side oi a plough, whether'suid auxiliary land-side be placed upon the'outer or inner side of said ordinary land-side,
substantially as herein shown ahd described, and for the purpose set forth.
