" TAT ES PATENT =FFICE.
JAMES SINCLAIR AND JOHN SELLERS, OF JONESBOROUGH, TEXAS.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 548,277, dated October 1895.
Application filed September 21, 1894. Serial No. 523,684- (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JAMES SINCLAIR and JOHN SELLERS, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Jonesborough, in the county of Coryell and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plows, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention contemplates certain new and useful improvements in plows; and it has for its object the production of simple and highly efficient means for regulating the depth of penetration of the plowshare in all kinds and conditions of soil.
To this end the invention consists of a bar or shoe extending from the plow-standard and designed to trail in the rear of the plowshare to regulate the depth thereof.
The invention further consists of a bar or shoe secured to the plow-standard and extending rearwardly therefrom, and straps for holding and adjusting said bar or shoe at the desired point.
The invention still further consists of a rear plate or runner attached to the nether side of the bar or shoe to sustain the latter and prevent its too great penetration. when plowing sandy or black soil. This runner is broad and obtains an extended bearing upon the ground.
The invention also comprises the details of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of our improved plow. Fig. 2 is a top plan View of the same. Fig. 3 is a rear end view thereof with the plowshare removed. Fig. 4 is a View in perspective of a portion of the standard and the depth-regulating bar or shoe and the runner.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the plow-beam, a the handles, and a the standard, which is preferably in loop form. This standard is firmly held in position by inclined braces a, secured thereto and to beam A.
B is the depth-regulatin g or bar shoe, which is pivotally held at its inner end within the standards by a nutted bolt b, which also unites the lower ends of braces a. to said standard. This bar or shoe is ogee-shaped,
and to its free or rear end I) are connected the lower ends of adjustable straps C, said straps being united to said arm by a nutted bolt 12*. Those straps are provided with a series of holes or openings 1) therein, through plowshare can be further regulated, greater or less tilting being thereby obtainable. There will be provided two standards D, one on each side of the beam A.
The advantages of our invention are apparent to those skilled into the art to which it appertains, and it will be specially observed that we have provided simple, inexpensive, and highly-eflicient means for regulating the depth of penetration of the plow-point, and that the parts are free from all complication and not liable to get out of order or be deranged.
The wear-plate or runner F is curved in its length and conforms to the rear end portion of the bar or shoe, and is secured to the latter in any convenient manner, preferably by having hooksf at its forward end, which engage with lateral projections g on the shoe, and by projections h at the rear end, which engage with a pin or fastening 't' on the shoe. This runner is detachable and is used when plowing sandy or black soil to prevent the shoe from sinking into the soil to too great a depth.
We claim as our invention- 1. In a plow the combination with the plow share and standard, of an approximately ogee shaped runner pivoted to the standard at its forward end, and a brace for vertically adjusting its rear end, of a shoe conformed in its length to the outline of the lower edge of the runner and detachably connected there- 'with by end fastenings, substantially as set forth.
2. In a plow, the combination with an approximately ogee shaped runner arranged to I to engage with the fastening at the rear end 1'6 trail in the rear of the plow share to regulate of the runner, substantially as specified.
its depth of penetration into the soil, of ashoe In 'testimon y whereof we affix our signacorresponding in shape to the outline of the tures in presence of two witnesses.
lower edge of the runner and detachably con- JAMES SINCLAIR. nected with the latter by means of hooks at JOHN SELLERS. the forward end of the shoe engaging with Witnesses:
lateral projections on the side of the runner, G. B. SMITH,
and by 'means of projections at the rear end j KIT MURRAY.
