HINGE-BRACKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 782,374, dated February 14, 1905. Application filed Ju1y14, 1904. Serial No. 216,617.
To (1 whom, it may concern:
Be it known that LERNnsT R. ARGENBRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Staunton, in the county'of Augusta and State of Virginia,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinge-Brackets, of which the following is a specification.
' This invention relates to an improved form of bracket or hinge member of the type genorally used for gates, doors, or the like; and the essential object of the invention is to provide a novel means for securing the device in operative position whereby the same may be attached to or removed from a post or similar part with great convenience and saving of time and trouble. I
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for efiecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings.
While the essential. and characteristic features of the invention are susceptible of modification, still the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of agatepost, showing the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view through a gate-post, the hinge-bracket embodying my invention being shown in operative position thereon. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the parts of the hinge-bracket separated.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in the all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Generally describing the invention, my bracket comprises, essentially, two members, a rigid member 1 and a movable member 2. The rigid member 1 consists of a plate 1, from which projects at an approximately right-angle the extension 1 In the preferred form of the invention the movable member also comprises a plate, and this plate is movably mounted upon theextension' 1 of the rigid member 1. To secure the bracket to the post, the said bracket is provided with rigid post-engaging pins 3,-and these pins 3 project from the inner sides of the plate 1 of the rigid member 1 and from the plate which comprises the movable member 2 of the bracket. It is designed that the pins 3 be formed integrally with the parts of the bracket from which they extend, being cast therewith if the said bracket is-formed in this manner. The pins 3 when the device is in operative position are received in recesses 4 in the gatepost 5,'and said gate-post, as illustrated, is of the ordinary type. In View of the fact that the pins 3 are rigid or integral with the bracket it is necessary in order that the said pins may be forced into engagement with the post that the bracket be made in sections, as shown in the drawings.
The member 2 of the bracket-is secured to the member 1 by means of a small bolt 6, and this bolt passes through longitudinal slots 7 and 7, provided in the members 1' and 2, respectively. The slot 7 is formed in the extension 1 of the member 1 and is elongated, so as to admit of adjustment of the member 2 longitudinally of the member 1, so that the bracket may be applied to differentsized posts. Projecting upwardly from the rigid member 1, at the angle formed by the disposition of the extension 1 relative to the plate 1 of said member, is a gate-supporting member or pin 8, which forms a journal upon which the gate is designed to swing in the or:

The hinge device above described is exceedingly simple and may be very cheaply manufactured, because of its simplicity both of structure and operation. Separate fastening members are done away with and the principal parts of the device are of integral formajected from the rigid member, amovable mem- 5 tion, so as to promote the general advantageous constructive features thereof.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In a hinge-bracket, the combination of a rigid member, a movable member, rigid postengaging pins projected from said members, andagate-supporting member projected from one of said members.
2. In a hinge-bracket, the combination of a rigid member consisting of a plate having an angular integral extension provided with an elongated slot, a gate-supporting pin prober comprising a detachable plate provided with elongated slots, fastening means passed through respective slots of the rigid and movable members, and integral post-engaging pins projected from the inner sides of the rigid and 20 movable members.
