SPECIFICATION forming part oi Letters Patent No. 782,110, dated February 7, 1905,
Application filed October 25, 1904. Serial No, 229,942.
To (1,77 1071 0112 it may concern/r Be it known that 1, VILLIAM R. COOPER, a i citizen of the United States, residing at Mc- Donald, in the county of ashington, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention. such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it a ppertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to wrenches, and more particularly to adjustable wrenches, and has for its object to provide a wrench so arranged that pressure against the handle thereof in one direction will cause the jaws of the wrenchto tightly grip any object with which they are engaged.
A further object is to provide a wrench of this kind in which the jaws will he automatically disengaged when the strain is removed from the handle,
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, and it will be understood that changes in the specilic construction shown maybe made and that any suitable materials may be used without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views. l igure l is aside elevation of the wrench. Fig. 2isalongitmlinal section. Fig. I is a detail perspective view of the recessed end of the handle. Fig. l is a section on line I) I; of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawings, the present invention comprises a handle 5, having one of its upper corners rounded, as shown at 6, and formed in the opposite sides of the handle are arc-shaped recesses T, which open through the rounded corner of the handle. in the upper end of the handle there is formed a triangular notch 8, with which the recesses 7 communicate, and at the side of this notch, away from the corner 6, there is an upwardly extending linger 9, having its face, which lies in the direction of the corner 6, beveled, as shown at It).
A jaw member 11 is provided and is bifurcated at its lower end, the resultant spaced ment away from the jaw l3.
portions being rounded to conform to the areshaped recesses T, one of these spaced portions being disposed in each of the recesses, and passed centrally through these spaced portions and through the handle there is a pivot-bolt 12. The jaw member 11 has a jaw 13 at its outer end, and disposed against the sides of the jaw member and secured thereto are the spaced portions of a yoke 14, the bight portion 15 of which lies below the jaw 13 and spaced from the forward face of the jaw member. Slidably engaged between the bight l5 and the forward face of the jaw member is a jaw-block 16, arranged for cooperation with the jaw 15, and this jaw-block is arranged for engagement of its lower end against the bevcled face 10 ot'the linger .l and in which posi tion it is yicldably held by a helical spring 1?. In its inner face the block us is provided with a groove lo, which terminates short of the lower end thereof. This groove receives a lug 19, which projects from the forward face of the jaw member, and the spring 17 is disposed within the groove lb between the end thereof and the linger 19.
As shown in Fig. 1, the jaw member lies normally at an angle to the handle, and the jaw-block l6 rests with one corner in the notch S and at the farthest limit of its movelhc jaw 13 may now be engaged with an object, and, as will be readily understood, movement of the handle 5 in one direction will cause the jaw member to rock upon the bolt 12, and the jaw-block ll), moving over the face of the linger ll, will be moved in the direction of the jaw l?) to tightly grip the object with which the latter is engaged. When the handle is moved in the. opposite direction, the spring U will return the parts to their original positions.
\Vhat is claimed is l. A wrench comprising a handle, a member pivoted to the handle and including a jaw, a jaw-block slidably connected with the member for movement toward and away from the jaw and arranged for cooperation therewith, said jaw-block having a recess therein, a lug carried by the pivoted member and extending into the recess, and a spring disposed within the recess between the bottom thereof and the lug, said spring being arranged to hold the jaw-block yieldably at the limit of its movement away from the first-named jaw, said jawblock being arranged for engagement by the handle to move it against the action of the spring when the handle is moved pivotally with respect to the member.
2. A wrench comprising a handle, a member pivoted to the handle and having a jaw, a yoke secured to the member and lying with its bight spaced therefrom, a jaw-block slidably engaged between the bight and the member and arranged for movement toward and away from the jaw and for cooperation there- XVILLIAM R.
