PATENT OFFICE.
HERMAN KERNGOOD, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR TO THE ALMA BUTTON COMPANY OF BALTIMORE CITY, A CORPORATION.
GLOVE-BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 781,660, dated February '7, 1905.
Application filed September l, 1904. Serial No. 223,018.
Be it known that I, HERMAN KnRNGoon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore city. State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in (ilove-Buttons, of which the following is a -spccilication.
My invention relates t an improvement in detachable buttons for gloves, plackets, and the like; and it consists in means for increasingl its durability and facilitating fastening' and uiifastening the parts, as well as in certain other novel features of construction and combinations of parts. which will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying' drawing's, Figure lis a view in perspective of the female socket. Fig. 2 is a section through the same with the cap-plate assembled. Fig'. 3 is a perspective view of the lower male section. Fig'. i is a section through the several parts assembled, and Fig. is a view in perspective of the head 3.
A represents the female section. This has l a slot cut across the lower end, as at l, to give the required spring to the socket formed in the interior, as indicated at 2. As shown in Figs. i2 and l, the outer end of the socket is constricted and smaller than the head 3 of the upper male section, whereas the interior of the socket is sufficiently larger, as shown in Fig'. et. to afford ample clearance and admitof free play of the male section in the knurlcd socket 2, thus preventing' undue wear and greatly prolonging' the life of the buttonprolonging' its life far in excess of others of this general type. The split portion l at the entrance affords the required spring or elasticity to permit the head to enter, after which it closes about it and retains the head in place. The metal at the end 4 of the shank 5 of the female section is measurably thicker than the remaining portion of the shell, as shown in Figs. Q and A, whereby a sufficient amount is provided for upsetting' into the cap 6, as shown in these figures. ln this way the parts are securely held together, the upset portion filling the orifice 'T in the lower side of the cap and extending' to the top plate 8 of the cap, thus supporting the latter and making' a rigid connection which is uniform all around, as shown. The lower section 9 of the male portion (shown in Fig'. 3) is spread, as at 10, (see Fig. 4,) into the enlarged end of the head 3, as clearly shown in Fig. 4.
A button of this type and construction is strong' in its parts, durablein use, and effectual in the performance of its functions and at the same time gives freedom of movement with a minimum of friction and wear.
Slight changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing' frorn the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction herein set forth; but,
Having` fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an article of manufacture, a button coinprising a cap having' an orilice in its lower side, and a knurled socket-section, the shank of which is thickened at its extreme end, and inserted into the orilice in the cap and upset therein, the lower open end of said socket-section being' split to give it resiliency and the interior enlarged to a greater diameter than the outer end to form an enlarged socket.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of' two witnesses.
HERMAN KERNGOOD.
