Description
ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
JOSEPH eredita, or NEW YORK, N. Y..
Laim Patent NMa-152, dated May '19, 1868.
IMPROVED SGUTTLE-GOVER AND IMIDDEP..-
i dilgttttrth nitriet tu in time tttttts what mit mating tartar tigt samt.
` Be it known that I, Josera Srnenn, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Ladder and SeuttleCover eombined and I do hereby declare the following taba/a full, clear, and exact description thereof, enabling those skilled in the art Vto make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figurefl represents a longitudinal section of this inventionvwhen th'e ladder is up and the scuttle closed.
Figure 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same when the ladder is down and the seattle open.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts. i
This invention Vconsists in the arrangement of a lever extending from a. hinged ladder to the hinged scuttlecover of a house or vessel, in suchv a manner that by the act of turning down .the 'ladder the seattle-cover' is raised, and by the act of raising the ladder the'seuttlc-eover is closed and locked.
When the ladder is up, it is locked by a suitable catch or fastening, and the throw or sweep of the ladder is adjusted by shifting the screw connecting said ladder to lthe seattle-cover. i i
v A represents a ladder, which is suspended from a rod, a, that has its bearings in suitable ears or brackets b, which are secured inside under the seattle-cover B. The cove'r closes down over the scuttle or aperture C in the usual manner, and it is connected to the edge or rim of said senttle by a hinge-jointyc, so that it can be turned ldown to the position shown in fig. 1, or up to the position shown in iig. 2.
From the end of the ladder extends an arm, d, to a lever, c, which is'hiuged to the cover B. The connec- .ltion between the arm el and the ladder is eil'eeted by a set-serewjand the connection of said arm 'with thc lever e is eiected-by a pivot, g, and these connections4 are so adjusted that when the ladder is turned down, the cover will swing up, and if the ladder is turned up, the cover will close down.
By shifting the seti-serewfcloser to or farther fromthe rod a, which supports the ladder,` the throw of the ladder can be adjusted to the height of the ceiling, or its motion can be so arranged that it swings up to the desired height, and that, when it is up, it can be reached conveniently by a person standing under the scuttle.
t When the ladder is turned up, it is locked by a catch, D, and by these means the scuttle-over isalso locked i down, so that it cannot be raised frornthe outside. -The advantages of this arrangement are apparent.
In the iirst place, the ladder being suspended from the rod a, cannot be removed, and isalways in position,
if it is needed in ease ci' a fire or any sudden emergency. Furthermore, when the ladder `is turned up, it is out ofthe way, and it is secured in such a position that it cannot be reached by children; and, finally, by locking t the ladder, the scuttle-eover is firmly locked against personsattemptingto e'ect an entrance into the house from the roof. i v
Having thus described my invention, what I claim asnew, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1 The arrangement ofr a lever, e,- conneeting the ladder A and cover B, substantially as and for the purpose described. 4
2. The loek-catcb D, in combination with the ladder A and seuttleeovcr D, substantially as and for the purpose Vset forth.
. JOSEPH STEGER.
