TEMPORARY BINDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 779,142, dated January 3, 1905. Application filed March 19, 1904.. Serial No. 198,904.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EMORY A. TRUSSELL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Temporary Binders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in temporary binders; and, briefly stated, it consists in means for rocking the spring-pressed oscillating prong-carrying members.

Fig. III is an enlarged cross-section taken on line III III, Fig. II. Fig. IV is an enlarged longitudinal section taken on line Fig. V is a perspective view of the oscillating-member actuating lever. Fig. VI is a perspective view of the ends of the oscillating members to which the actuating-lever is applied. Fig. VII is an enlarged cross-section taken on line VII VII, Fig. I. Fig. VIII is an enlarged cross-section of the opposing edges of the oscillating members of the binder.

2 is a dished spring-plate having inturned side flanges 3, as most clearly seen in Figs. II, III, and VII.
4 designates oscillating plates having their outer edges seated against the inner faces of the spring-plate flanges 3, one of said oscillating plates being provided with a double-angle edge I and the other plate being provided with a socket edge I", as seen most clearly in Fig. VIII. These two edges of the oscillating plates are innermost and oppose each other, so that the angle edge of one plate will fit into the socket edge of the other plate for rocking movement.
5 designates arclrprongs carried by the oscillating plates 4 and adapted to be separated into the position seen in Fig. VII when the inner edges of said plates are sprung outwardly against the restraining action offered by the spring-plate 2, within which they are seated. When the inner edges of the spring plate are moved inwardly, they pass. a deadcenter, as illustrated in Fig. IILand the flanges of the spring-plate by pressing against the outer edges of the oscillating plates hold their inner edges in depressed position and maintain the arch-prongs in closed condition.
Noinventionpa'r 86 is herein claimed for the construction of the binder thus far explained.
One end of each of the oscillating plates I at its inner edge is cut away, as illustrated in Figs. II and VI, to produce a notch 6.
7 is a lever loosely mounted upon a pin 8,-
seated in the spring-plate 2, so as to be capable of a vertical rocking movement. The outer or forward end of this lever serves as a handle or finger-piece 9. The inner end of the lever is provided with aneck 10,that extends upwardly and forwardly and occupies a position in the notch 6 of the meeting oscillating plates, and at the forward termination of the neck 10 is a head 11, that projects over the ends of the oscillating plates alongside of the notch 6 therein.
When the oscillating plates are in depressed condition and the arch-prongs 5 closed downwardly, pressure is applied to the linger-piece 9 of the lever 7", and the rear end of the lever by upward pressure against the under sides of the oscillating plates oscillates them out wardly to open the prongs. Reverse movement of the lever 7 causes the head 11 of the lever to exert pressure against the upper sides of the oscillating plates to carry them forwardly and close the prongs.
12 is a face-plate that is provided with inturned flanges 13, that fit over the sides of the spring-plate 2 to inclose the forward faces of the spring-plate and oscillating plates held thereby, the face-plate being provided with openings 14, in which the prongs 5 operate.
I claim as my invention 1. In a temporary binder, the combination of a spring-plate, a pair of oscillating plates rockingly confined by said spring plate,
prongs carried by said oscillating plates, and a lever having connection With said oscillating plates to impart rocking motion thereto, substantially as set forth.
2. In a temporary binder; the combination of a spring-plate, a pair of oscillating plates rockingly confined by said spring plate, prongs carried by saidpscillating plates, and a lever having connection With said oscillating plates to impart rocking motion thereto; said lever having a rear end seated beneath said oscillating plates and a head located above-said oscillating plates, substantially as set forth.
3. In a temporary binder, the combination of a spring-plate having inturned flanges, a pair of oscillating plates positioned between said flanges and loosely fitted together at their inner edges, prongs carried by said oscillating plates, a lever pivoted to said spring-plate and having its inner end positioned beneath the plates, a neck carried by said lever and ex tending between said oscillating plates, and a head carried by said neck and positioned above said plates, substantially as set forth.
