To all whom t it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL H. WHEELER, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Fairfield, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Cabinets for Sewingchine cabinets a hinged door or panel opening out from the back of the cabinet has been provided, thus rendering the use of the cabinet inconvenient and permissible only when it is drawn away from the wall, and thus in some situations depriving the operator of proper light. In these prior constructions also the use of thefolding leaf has been restricted and it has been inconveniently arranged for the operator.
In the present invention the door comprises not only the front panel,- but also half or about half of one side of the cabinet and is hinged at the side of the cabinet, so that when opened not only is the front panel swung out of the way of the operator, but also. one half of the side, and thus the interior of the cabinet is very fully exposed, so as to leave the operator free to move from side to side and better ventilation is secured. Not only do these advantages accrue from the construction described, but the door, with its appurtenances, is swung beneath the hinged leaf, and thus is entirely out of the way of the operator.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, in the two figures of which like parts are similarly designated, Figure 1 is a perspective view with the cabinet open. Fig. 2 is a perspective view with the cabinet closed.
The base 1, back 2, right side 3, top 4, dropmechanism are here shown as and leaf 5, hinged leaf 6, and the usual operating maybe of usual construction.
The door comprises the front piece or panel 7, to which may be applied the till 8 and drawers 9 and lock 10, of usual construction. One half or about one half, 11, of the left-hand side of the cabinet is made fast or stationary relatively to the base, back, and top, while the other half, 12, is made fast to the portion 7 of the door and substantially at right angles thereto, and thus becomes a component part of the door, and this side piece or portion 12 of the door is connected with the stationary portion 11 by means of hinges 13, upon which the door as a whole swings.
When the cabinetis opened for use, the door may be swung open beneath the leaf 6,-and thus expose the interior of the cabinet, so as to give the operator perfect freedom of movement and at the same time insure ample ventilation of the cabinet, and, moreover, it will be observed that the cabinet may remain backed up against a wall without in the least .interfering with the opening of the door and so that the operator may obtain the best possible light on the machine.
What I claim is 1. A sewing-machine cabinet, having half of one side fixed and the other half hinged to the fixed half, and a door comprising a front piece and the hinged half of the side rigidly united substantially at right angles, so that said door is adapted to be swung open laterally and rearwardly to clear the front of the cabinet and a portion of its side so as to expose the sewing-machine operating mechanism at the front and side.
2. A sewing-machine cabinet, adapted to contain and conceal the sewing-machine and its operating'mechanism, comprising a base, a back, a fixed side, and a suitable top, its other side divided vertically and a portion thereof fixed, combined with a door consisting of a front panel and the portion constituting the remainder of the divided side rigidly united substantially at right angles and hinged to the fixed portion of the divided side laterally and rearwardly so as to uncover the front and a portion of one side of the cabinet and thereby expose the operating mechanism at front and side.
