Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES E. SMITH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JULIUS LUDWIG, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT lN CABINETS FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 110.507, dated December 27, 1870.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES E. SMiTH, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State ot' Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding Cabinets for Sewing- Machines; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters ot' reference marked thereon, and being apart of this specification.
Figure l is a perspective view of the cabinet fully opened with the table extended. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same closed up, taken on the line x x, Fig. l. Y
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
This invention has for its object the construction Of a folding cabinet for sewing-inachines in which the size is reduced, the general appearance changed when closed, and a large and convenient work table furnished when opened for operation.
The invention consists in the novel and peculiar construction of the cabinet and in the method of operating the same, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings, A represents the body ot' my cabinet, consisringot' two side walls and a back Wall, mounted on aproper base, as shown. The upper front corners ot the side walls are sawed out in the form of a quarter-circle, A', and hinged thereto, as at a, permitting them to be folded back, as shown in Fig. l. Between the extremities ofthe sections A is secured a shelf, B, on which is in turn secured the folding table C, about the construction of which there is nothing new. On this table the sewing-machine is placed, and so arranged that it may be readily connected with or detached from the treadle and operating mechanism. Across the front end of the cornersections A a front board, D, is secured, to one edge of which a flap, E, is hinged, forniing a similar and lower front board when the cabinet is closed, vbeing provided With a lock to engage with the base.
F is the cover or top of the cabinet, hinged in front to the upper edge of the front board,
D. When the cabinet is to be opened this top slides behind the rear wall, the flap E also folding back, when the table C may be eX- tended to give a much larger working-table than those ot the ordinary kind. To keep the top in place and prevent it from being lifted up, it is provided at its rear edge with a clip, b, which engages with a socket in the top edge ofthe rear wall ot' the cabinet as it is drawn forward to close.
Vhen closed the cabinet becomes a neat and ornamental piece of furniture.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The construction and arrangement ot' the walls A, wall-sections A. front board, D,lap E, and top F, in connection with the folding table C, substantially as and for the purposes herein shown and set forth.
