SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 777,820, dated December 20, 1904.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ALBERT P. TALIAFERRO. of Harrisonburg, in the county of Rockingham, and in the State of Virginia, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Foot- Rests; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my footrest. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a bed having my rest applied thereto, the rest being shown in operative position in full lines and in inoperative position in dotted lines; and Fig.3 is a plan View of my foot-rest, the outlines of the bed being shown in dotted lines.

Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.

The object of my invention is to provide a rest for use in bed to sustain the feet in a desired position longitudinally of the bed; and to such end my invention consists in the footrest hereinafter specified.

In carrying my invention into practice I provide a frame A, formed of a rod or heavy wire of a stiff material, such as steel, said rod or wire preferably being round in cross-section. Such rod is bent at each end of a straight middle section a at right angles to such section and is again bent parallel to said middle section, and such operation is repeated until two series of steps b 0 d e and b 0 d e are formed, one series on each side of the central step. If desired, only asingle series of steps can be formed. I prefer to form such steps about twice the width of the foot and a height about half their width. At the outer extremities of the series of steps the rod or wire is bent back, forming sections f and f perpendicular to the steps and in the direction of the first step. At points opposite each other, 9 and g, the ends of the rod or wire are bent toward each other to form a base 71, and the free ends and a may be joined together, or eyes I; and k may be formed thereon to prevent injury to the feet of the person using the rest.

The frame is preferably covered with soft material Z, which is a non-conductor of heat,

such as felt-covered rubber tubing, so that its contact shall not be unpleasant to the skin.

In use the rest is placed between the sheets of the bed with its base resting against the footboard thereof. When it is desired to support the knees in an elevated position, the upper end of the rest is raised, so that the soles of the feet can come in contact therewith, and the feet are placed against the step, probably the lowest one, which sustains the feet in the desired position. The rest is equally adapted for contact with the heel, instep, ball, or toes in sustaining the feet, the contact with the desired portion of the foot being obtained by inclining the rest in the position which brings the step to the desired elevation. The rest can readily be raised by the feet. If it is desired to sit up in bed, the feet are placed in contact with one of the higher steps, and the body is thus prevented from slipping toward the footboard of the bed. The provision of a series of steps adapts the same rest to people of a variety of heights.

When it is not desired to use the rest, it can be allowed to lie flat in the bed, the curves under the ankle or knee permitting the rest to lie under the legs without discomfort, or the rest can be moved to an unoccupied side of the bed.

It is obvious that my rest can be used in other locations than a bed.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A foot-rest, comprising a thin, flat frame that is adapted to be placed in a bed, such frame having a wide base that is adapted to rest against the footboard, having a portion substantially parallel to the base for engagement with the frame such frame being open, whereby the legs can be placed over said lastmentioned portion of the frame and such portion can be received under the curves of the ankle.

2. A foot-rest comprising a fiat frame that is adapted to be placed in a bed, such frame having a series of steps for engagement with the feet, substantially as and for the purpose described.

3. A foot-rest comprising a frame that is adapted to be placed in a bed, such frame having a flat portion forming a series of steps for engagment with the feet, substantially as and for the purpose described.

4:. A foot-rest, comprising a thin, flat open frame composed of Wire or rod covered with a material that is non-conductive to heat, such frame having a Wide base that is adapted to rest against the footboard and having a series of steps for engagement with the feet.

5. A foot-rest comprising a thin frame having a base for engagement with the footboard of a bed, and a series of steps formed at different distances from such base, said steps being for engagement With the feet, substantially as and for the purpose described.

6. A foot-rest comprising a Wire frame having a base for engagement With the footboard of a bed, and a series of steps formed at different distances from such base, said steps being for engagement with the feet, substantially as and for the purpose described.

7. A foot-rest comprising a frame that is adapted to be placed in a bed, such frame having tWo series of steps extending in opposite directions, said steps being for engagement with the feet, substantially as and for the purpose described.
