CLOTHES-RACK. I
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 77?,185, dated December 13, 1904.
' Application filed -lannary 20, 1904. Serial No- 189,8l4- (No model.)
To It whom; it may concern.-
Be it known that I, NOAH M. Cornea, a citizen of the United States, residing at Frankfort, in the county of Ross and State of Ohio, have made certain'new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Racks, of which the following is a specification.
, My invention is an improvement in that classof clothes-racks having a series of hinged or pivoted arms adapted to be extended horizontally and radially or folded in vertical position parallel to each other when not required for use. T have combined a series of such hinged arms with a box adapted to contain' them when not in use, the swinging cover or door of said box being adapted to support the arms horizontally'in position for use.
The invention is embodied in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter described, and shown in the accompanylng drawings, in wh1ch- Figure 1 is-a perspective view of my improved clothes-rack, the hinged arms beingfolded within the box and the door or cover thereof secured in closedposition. Fig. 2 is a vertical section showing the hinged arms extended in horizontal position, as in use. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a face view of the upper portion of the apparatus. the hinged arms bemg shown folded within the box and the door of the latter open. Fig. 5.is a perspective view of the hinged holder to which the arms are pivoted.
A. indicates the box to which the arms B are permanently attached by means of a hinged holder C. The box A is rectangular and oblong and provided with a hinged door a, which constitutes its front. side and is provided with a top shelf or bracket a. The
.door may be secured in closed position by a catch a or any other suitable device. The holder C is constructed of sheet or plate metal whose parallel members are separated by the thickness of the arms B and provided with loops cto receive the hinge bolt or pivot a. (See Fig. 2.) The arms B are pivoted be tween the plates and adapted to swing into radial position, as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3, or to be folded parallel, as shown in Fig. 4,
the swinging door a of the box is closed, and-- its bracketor shelf a then affords a support for the arms, as will be readily understood. As shown, the said shelf or bracket a is located a short distance below the top a or far enough to provide a slot or side opening through which the holder C may project when the arms are extended, as shown in Fig. 2. The armsB are then swung laterally from each other or separated radially, as indicated in Fig. 3. When no longer required for use, they are swung back into parallel position,
, and the door a being opened they are pressed back into the box,.as indicated in Fig. ft, and the door a then closed and secured, asln Fig. 1. I thus provide a simply-constructed,
durable, compact, and easily-portable clothesrack which may behung. up wherever desired for use and which protects the hinged arms from dust when the same are folded. It is also adapted to be easily manipulated for placing the arms in working position or housing them when not in use.
The box A is adapted to be hung upon a nail against the wall or upon any other fixed support, or it may be attached to the latter in any preferred manner.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,;is-
1. The improved clothes-rack comprising an oblong box, a series of arms and a holder in which they are secured, said holder being hinged to the top portion of the box within the same, and a swinging door which'closes the entire front portion of the box, save at the top where the arms are adapted to project when in use, the top portion of said door being adapted to support the arms horizontally when the door is closed in the manner dethe same when folded laterally and vertically,
scribed.
2. The improved clothes-rack, comprising an oblong box, a series of arms and a holder in which they are pivoted, said holder being hinged to the top portion of the box, a coilspring applied to the hinge of the said holder, and tending to throw the arms upward, and a swinging door adapted to form the front por- IO tion of the box and to hold the arms within substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
NOAH M. COYNER.
In presence of i D. L. SUTHERLAND, f W. R. BEARD.
