To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN F. APPELHANS, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Andover, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Cabinets for Talking-Machine Records, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.

This invention relates to a cabinet for talking machine records, and has for one of its objects to provide a cabinet with a rack or record holding member so constructed that when the cabinet is closed the records are supported in a vertical position thus preventing them from losing their shape; and when the cabinet is opened the records are supported in a horizontal position so that they can be conveniently removed.

The cabinet is also so constructed that when it is open for the removal of the records, said records are situated within the cabinet, and are, therefore, thoroughly protected even though the cabinet should be left open.

In the drawings Figure 1 is a side view of a cabinet embodying my invention with part of the cabinet broken out to show the record holding devices; Fig. 2 is a front view of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a section on the line x0c, Fig. 1.

The cabinet is designated generally by G and may have any suitable or usual construction, it having one or more openings V in its front, in which openings the racks or record holders are supported. Each record holder comprises a front B and a base 0 from which extends a plurality of record holding pins A. When the cabinet is closed the record holders occupy the position shown at the top, in Fig. 1, that is the base 0 thereof stands horizontally and the record holding pins A extends vertically. The records are, therefore, held in a vertical position which is the best position in which to support them because they are less liable to become disturbed or to lose their shape when in a vertical position. I

The record holder is mounted so that it can be turned into a position to bring the record holding pins horizontally, as shown in the lower record holder in Fig. 1, this turning of the record holder being accomplished without swinging it outside of the cabinet, so that when any record holder is thrown into its open position the pins A are still located within the cabinet. To accomplish this I provide each record holder at each end with a pair of pins N and O, which pins work in slots P and R in plates Q secured to the sides of the cabinet. The slot P extends vertically and the slot R substantially horizontally, the latter slot however being slightly inclined at its front end, as at D.

. The slots and grooves P and R might be made directly in the side of the cabinet without departing from my invention, but I prefer to form them in the plates Q which are secured to the cabinet by suitable screws S.

In swinging any record holder to its open position so as to render the record supported thereby accessible the lower edge of the record holder is pushed inwardly so that the pins 0 slide on the horizontal slots R, the vertical slots P preventing the record holder from being carried entirely outside of the cabinet during this movement. When the record-holder is thrown into the open position the pins A stand horizontally but yet are located within the limits of the cabinet. The records supported by the horizontal pins are readily accessible but yet are situated within the cabinet, and are, therefore, protected from injury.

The front and base of each record holder are braced together by suitable braces U, and the pins N and O are shown as being carried by the plate M which is secured to the ends of the front B of the holder. The front of each holder may be provided with suitable knobs or handholds E by which the record holder is thrown into its open or closed position.

The cabinet is made with cross-pieces II between each of the openings V, and the object of making the horizontal slot R with the inclined portion D is so that the bottom of the record holder will be raised slightly as it moves inwardly, thereby preventing the front B of the record-holder from engaging the cross-piece H when the record holder is in open position. This prevents the front B from becoming marred or scratched.

While the construction herein shown for guiding the record holder in its opening and closing movement is the preferred construction yet my invention is not limited thereto. The main object of the invention is to provide a construction in which when the record holder is in open position the records are held horizontally but situated within the cabinet.

Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-

1. In a. cabinet for talking machine records, a casing having an opening in its front, and having both a horizontal and a vertical slot at each end of said opening, a record holder situated within the opening, said record holder having at each end two pins which enter the slots at said end of the opening.

2. In a device of the class described, a cabinet having an opening in its front, a record-holder situated Within the opening, said record-holder having a front piece and a base piece arranged at right angles to each other, and record-holding pins extending from the base piece, combined with supporting plates secured to the cabinet, each plate having a vertical slot near the front of the cabinet and a horizontal slot near the bottom of said opening, and pins extending from the front of the record-holder and slidably engaging the vertical slots of the plates, and other pins extending from the base of the holder and slidably engaging the horizontal slots.

3. In a device of the class described, a cabinet having an opening in its front, a record-ho1der situated within the opening, said record-holder having a front piece and a base piece arranged at right angles to each other, and

record-holding pins extending from the base piece, combined with supporting plates secured to the cabinet, each plate having a vertical slot near the front of the cabinet and a horizontal slot near the bottom of said opening, and pins extending from the front of the record-holder near the top thereof and received in the vertical slots, and other pins extending from the base of the record-holder near the front thereof and received in the horizontal slots.

4. In a device of the class described, a cabinet having an opening in its front, a record holder comprising a front to close the opening and a base provided with record holding pins, and means to support the record holder, said means comprising a plate secured to the side of the cabinet and having a vertical and a. horizontal slot, and pins projecting from the record holder and engaging said slots. 15
